Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Saeed Bin Suroor is back in town to win the race that has eluded Godolphin for the past 13 years – The Melbourne Cup.
The world’s richest stable have two horses Lost In The Moment $31 with Luxbet and Modun $26.
Those horses will be having their first start in Australia in the Cup, something only one international has achieved – Vintage Crop.
Born in Dubai on November 16, 1968, Suroor was brought up with horses and enjoyed riding and working with them from an early age.
While walking the beat in downtown Dubai as a policeman, he decided to train a few horses in his spare time.
It proved to be the best choice of his life.
Sheik Mohammed, part of the ruling family in Dubai and founder of the Godolphin stables, kicked Saeed off with 30 horses in 1992.
Three years later he was appointed head trainer at Godolphin and success followed success ever since.
One may say it isn’t that tough when you have the millions of dollar behind you but in truth that makes it tougher.
There are no excuses for failure but happily Saeed has produced.
A four time premiership winning trainer in England (1996, 98, 99 and 2004) he has had winners all around the world .
In fact, under the Godolphin banner, Saeed had had black type winners in 12 different countries.
Suroor saddled the stable’s 100th Grade/Group One winner – achieved with Sulamani’s victory in the Arlington Million in 2003.
That figure now stands at 166 Group/Grade 1 winners.
One of the more difficult tasks he has faced is making an influence in Australia.
Godolphin had their first runners in Australia in 1998 and since then there biggest victory came with All The Good in the 2008 Caulfield Cup.
The Melbourne Cup has proved to be elusive with three runner-up cheques going back to Godophin with Central Park (1999), Give The Slip (2001) and Crime Scene (2009).
You don’t get all that success by mistake however and the Godolphin duo should be respected.
Thay have settled in well and worked well – the question is have thay got the class.
Modun has won at Group 3 level while Lost in the Moment Is yet to win blacktype. One thing is sure they will be cherry ripe for the day.
