While the offer is spectacular it’s not going to be any good to you unless you have the information to take advantage of it so that’s where our Melbourne Cup Tips come in.

It’s a notoriously trick race to pick but over the last few years we’re seeing a pattern of success in the lead races.

We’re following a similar path again in 2011 with our tips taking horses on current form more than simply promised potential.

That’s the key to the two miles at Flemington, unless the horse is fit and racing well they simply won’t get into the race as it’s not the type of event where you can find form in running.

It’s a tough and scrappy event and it takes an equally tough horse to get the job done.

2011 Melbourne Cup Tips

#1 – Americain ($4.40 @ Luxbet)

He’s the defending champion and since being in Australia he’s produced some ominous signs that he’s ready to do it again. To be fair he wasn’t in the same kind of form as 2010 when he arrived in the country but since then it’s been the Americain of old. Connections say he turns into a different horse once he gets into this environment with something about the change in scenery letting him thrive. He won the Moonee Valley Cup from a seemingly impossible position on the turn and it’s that type of class that can mean so much in the Melbourne Cup. The trip is obviously of no concern and neither in barrier 15 as he has the ability to take a position or settle back in the pack. The 58kg weight could be a concern but he’s a big strong horse and back in Europe regularly carries 60kg plus. Americain is the defending champion and the number one pick to making it back to back Melbourne Cup victories in 2011.

#9 – Lucas Cranach ($11 @ Luxbet)

This is the horse that attracted the most interest in Melbourne Cup betting a few weeks ago with a massive betting plunge seeing his odds plummet. It’s a tough form line to line up though with Lucas Cranach racing in Germany, a different lead in to what we’re usually used to. There was a mountain of interest then going into his first up run in Australia where he competed in the 2011 Caulfield Cup. He was a big drifter before that race though with a foot problem almost forcing him to be scratched. In the end he did start and flew home late with a fast finishing fifth. Punters have continued to back him for the Melbourne Cup on the basis of the extra distance helping as well the fact he’ll be back to full fitness. There’s no doubt he has the closing kick you need to win a Melbourne Cup and that’s why he slots in as our second pick.

#3 – Dunaden ($8 @ Luxbet)

He’s effectively Americain version two as he attempts to exactly repeat the efforts of the 2010 champion. Not only is he trained in France he came to Australia on the back of excellent form this year. His first up test in the country was the Geelong Cup, the same as Americain last year, and it was the same result as well. He flashed home to claim the race with relative ease after settling towards the back of the pack and the warning for rivals was he went into it only 85% fit. Come Melbourne Cup day he’ll be in tip top shape and taking into account that improvement he simply has to be a force here.

#17 – At First Sight ($13 @ Luxbet)

Well after picking three internationals we have to find a local hope, even if his origins are from further abroad. The path of At First Sight to the 2011 Melbourne Cup has been quite unusual with a couple of problems hampering his progress. Despite that his previous tow runs have been super impressive even if he didn’t quite get there on the line. He ran second in the Naturalism Stakes back in September before a big layoff of over a month. It was hardly the prep he needed but in the Bendigo Cup once again he stormed home late coming from dead last on the turn to run second. It looks like he’ll get every piece of the two miles and on the wide Flemington track he will by flying late and is a genuine winning hope.

Melbourne Cup Roughies

These are the horses that didn’t quite make our top tips but could run a race and be a solid chance at good value.

#23 – Niwot ($15 at Luxbet)

He won the Lexus Stakes in scintillating style and if he brings that kind of form to the Melbourne Cup he’s a massive chance.

#2 – Jukebox Jury ($12 at Luxbet)

He’s tough to have because he will be first up into the Melbourne Cup but his form back in Europe has been fantastic and his forward running nature will give himself every chance.

#14 – Illo ($21 at Luxbet)

You can’t put together your Melbourne Cup tips without taking the master into consideration and this import is Bart Cumming’s best hope come Tuesday.

That’s it, our tips for the 2011 Melbourne Cup as well as the latest fixed price odds at Luxbet.

You’d be crazy not to have a crack at the race, especially when Luxbet will let you do it risk free!
