2011 Melbourne Cup distance doubt on Glass Harmonium

Glass Harmonium is going into the Group 1 $6m 2011 Melbourne Cup (3200m) with a touch of class and very good form on his side.

On Saturday the grey confirmed two things by winning the $1m Mackinnon Stakes (2000m). He likes racing at Flemington and he likes to lead in his races.

So why is our friends at Luxbet offering $34 about the Mike Moroney trained galloper?

There is one glaring problem with Glass Harmonium, or perceived problem as it stands at the moment.

The six year old is a doubt of running out a strong 3200m.

It is no mug punter down the rode with that concern but the people closest to the horse.

Moroney has his doubts that his latest star will run it out.

He would have been happy enough not to have run Glass Harmonium in the 2011 Melbourne Cup.

The owners pushed ahead anyway but have been badly bruised by drawing gate 23 for the Melbourne Cup of 2011.

For Glass Harmonium to get to his most desired role in front, he will need to use plenty of petrol and with the doubt over the trip things could turn nasty.

Moroney has done a great job with the son of Verglas since it arrived in Australia earlier this year.

He worked out he is better in front which was the opposite to how he raced in England.

Glass Harmonium has never finished further back than second at three starts at Flemington.

He is a free rolling type who keeps going at the same pace – a quick one at that.

The furthest he has raced is at 2400m when second to Tullamore, Luxbet 2011 Melbourne Cup price  $21, in the Brisbane Cup at Eagle Farm in June.

Glass Harmonium can also get fired up before a race and the services of Lisa Cropp will help as she knows the horse very well.

If this was a 2000m race – Glass Harmonium would probably start favourite – but of course it isn’t and he may get out to very big odds.
