Today at Flemington the third race on the Victoria Derby Day program is the 2011 Wakeful Stakes for three-year-old fillies, and below the Races.com.au team have our exclusive trifecta tip for the clash.
Due to jump at 12:40pm (AEDST), the $300,000 Group 1 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) features a final field of 10 hopefuls and in the mix is an odds-on favourite in Atlantic Jewel.
For punters that haven’t followed this freakishly talented filly, they will see a lightly-raced daughter of Fastnet Rock that has four wins from as many starts to her name.
She is a Group 1 winner last-start in the Thousand Guineas by a blistering margin and while today is her first test at the 2000 metres and her first time at Flemington, her class and imposing record to date ensure she is short in the markets.
At our preferred online bookmaker Luxbet, Mark Kavanagh’s 2011 Crown Oaks-bound talent is paying $1.30 to salute in her fifth on the trot, a price that has eased out slightly from Atlantic Jewel’s opening odds of $1.25.
So is Atlantic Jewel the Races.com.au team’s pick to win the Wakeful Stakes 2011?
You bet she is.

Flemington Race 3 Tips – Wakeful Stakes Betting
- 1st: #1 Atlantic Jewel – Rated special to win at $1.30 through Luxbet
Just look at that form – 1111 – you don’t win your opening four career starts, including an elite level, without being a star in the making.
Atlantic Jewel has the record, she beat a field of similarly-classed if not better rivals than she faces here by an easy three lengths in the Guineas, so that suggests she will do so again.
Kavanagh says she has come on and improved, and we tend to believe him.
Michael Rodd in the mount, and as for the 58kg topweight she has carried that before when winning over 1400 metres at Caulfield by three lengths on September 24.
She has the speed, the record, the draw, the support of the punters – this is one odds-on favourite not to bet against.
- 2nd: Dowager Queen – Lock her in with Atlantic Jewel for the Exacta at Luxbet
Following in the order of the odds here Dowager Queen is next in line, and it seems the bookies have it right for the Wakeful.
Graeme Rogerson’s well-tried Savabeel filly is the $7 second elect at Luxbet, and second is where we see her finishing.
She is drawn one outside the favourite and we expect a similar showdown to what was produced with Atlantic Jewel and Mosheen in the Guineas, Dowager Queen to get a lovely run up with the favourite before Atlantic Jewel hits that next gear and pulls away.
- 3rd: Gliding – Add her in the Trifecta with the top two elects at Luxbet
There is a lot to like about this Bart Cummings-trained filly that beat Dowager Queen last-start by one and a half lengths in the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on Thousand Guineas Day.
It was tough to say she won’t do so again here, but Dowager Queen was very unlucky that run. Gliding will really be at her peak for the Crown Oaks over the 2500m and while it would be nice to say Bart gets his 15th Wakeful today, we think Gliding will be a fast finishing third.
- Roughie Selection: #9 When My Baby – $201 to Win through Luxbet worth a sneaky dollar!
Stablemate to last year’s Wakeful Stakes – Crown Oaks winner Brazilian Pulse, this Mike Moroney-trained Captain Rio filly is bred for this distance, is a maiden but hasn’t been to the 2000 metres yet making today her day to show what she’s made of.
Gets a gun run from barrier two, she ran a close third from 11 over the mile at Ballarat last start, and can see a sneaky place if more preferred get caught in traffic.
