Galah Makes Punters Sweat In 2011 Carbine Club Stakes

Galah is the Carbine Club Stakes 2011 winner

He was the first of the short priced favourites to jump on 2011 Victoria Derby Day and Galah had punters hearts in their mouth right up until the final stride of the 2011 Carbine Club Stakes.

With 100m to go it looked like he simply wasn’t going to get there with Highly Recommended travelling beautifully out in front.

On any other track in the country the finish line would have come far too soon but at Flemington the shorty got up, just.

It’s a huge relief for punters, especially the thousands that have taken Galah as part of a multi bet with the other favourites throughout the day.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy was forced to give him a bit of a slap at the 600m mark as he worked four wide at the top of the straight.

From there it seemed like it would be only a matter of time before he hit the front but at best he made gradual inroads, at worst he barely held his position.

In the end though eh got there in a photo and that’s all the matters for the punters as the bookies chalk up a big early loss.

“Today he just took a little bit of time to get there,” McEvoy said.

“I was worried for the last three or four bounds.

“That last run maybe took that little bit out of him.”

A good deal of the credit must go for the win has to rest with the jockey too as he never gave up on a horse that many, (this writer included), gave up on inside the final furlong.

It was the first time he wore winkers but McEvoy says they probably helped, he’s still just a bit green.

“He didn’t travel in the run the other day, he travelled today but he’s still learning and a bit of a goofball,” he said.

Peter Snowden was feeling the stress of the punters down the straight as well and admits he wasn’t expecting that much of a fight.

“Wasn’t meant to be that hard, at least he’s won and that’s the main thing,” he said.

He says the horse will have one final run this prep at Sandown in a fortnight before being spelled ahead of a big autumn program.

“Probably another six months away from being his best, 2000m or further his best difference,” he said.

Galah paid out $1.50 at Luxbet while Highly Recommended was $2.20 and impressive roughie Saint Etienne $6.50 for third.
