Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The short priced favourites are two from two at Flemington today and after the performance of Atlantic Jewel in the Wakeful Stakes we could well have something very special on our hands.
The talk before she jumped was that the 2000m could be a query but not a chance, she was barely shaken up as she cruised from the tail of the field to hit the lead four wide at the top of the straight.
The pace was fair in the early stages but it wouldn’t have mattered what they did as Atlantic Jewel simply cruised along until asked to make a move.
The big thing though is we still haven’t seen this horse fully ridden out, when jockey Michael Rodd decided to make his run she simply did all the work within herself.
Once she got clear off the bend it was game set and match as she won as she liked, all up five lengths between her and the second placed Rahveel.
Dowager Queen got home late from the tail of the field to run third but there was nothing else in it as Atlantic Jewel proved herself as a genuine superstar by cantering to victory in the 2011 Wakeful Stakes.
From here she’ll go to the 2011 Crown Oaks on Thursday and you’d be lucky to get so much as $1.20 for her as she stands head and shoulders above any other three year old filly in the country.
Rodd will be on her back then as well and would take this ride all day every day if he could.
“That’s probably the easiest winner I’ve ever ridden I think,” he said.
“She had the race under control from the 600m, I got there way too early but she was just going too good.
“I can’t be more happy with her and the way Mark Kavanagh has handled her.”
He says it doesn’t take a genius to get her to the line and it’s an honour to have the privilege.
“You just know you’ve got to keep her out f trouble and she does the rest,” he said.
For the trainer it’s a big reward after at one stage he strongly considered putting her in the spelling paddock.
“I wanted to tip her out after the Guineas but she improved, what do you do,” he said.
She has to be a certainty to run in the Oaks now even if Kav does keep trying to play it cool.
“If she does well tonight ill certainly consider giving her a run on Thursday,” he said.
“She took a lot of time, before she won a maiden I said she’d win the Thousand Guineas.”
Atlantic Jewel paid $1.30 at Luxbet while the second placed Rahveel was worth a big $7.70. Dowager Queen rounded out the top three at $1.50.
