2011 Victoria Derby Odds – Market Movers & Punter Picks

Big money bets are starting to roll in on an upset Victoria Derby 2011 result at Flemington on Saturday with Peter Snowden’s impressive Geelong Classic winner Induna closing in on easing race favourite Manawanui in the latest markets.

Despite being the best-tried, most consistent and obvious form pick for the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m), Manawanui has continued to drift in the Luxbet odds since betting opened on the final field.

Manawanui

Manawanui continues to grow in value to win the 2011 Victoria Derby

Opening at $2.30 the last-start Vase victor has blown right out to $2.60, making Manawanui an excellent value Victoria Derby bet at Luxbet.

So if not the favourite, then who are the punters coming for in the Victoria Derby markets and why?

Induna has been the most heavily-backed Victoria Derby hopeful this year crunched in from $6 to $4.60 at Luxbet.

While the Geelong Cup, which the Elusive Quality gelding won by an impressive three and a half lengths, as a form race for the Derby is still questionable, the punters aren’t waiting to find out.

Overcoming barrier 11, carrying 56kg and facing a field full of fellow Derby hopes including runner-up Cornell, third placegetter Perfect Punch and the fourth-placed Mr Chez, Induna impressed connections including owner Sheikh Mohammed who will be trackside at Flemington for the Derby on Saturday so much they paid the hefty $82,500 late entry to get time into this race.

To recoup that Induna needs to place top three tomorrow with the Victoria Derby winner taking home $900,000, runner-up $270,000 and third placegetter $135,000.

Drawn in gate 12 they will come into 10 with the emergencies out giving them every chance in the capacity field, and while jockey Kerrin McEvoy knows Manawanui is the one to beat, he believes he is in the saddle of the one that can do just that.

“He’s an exciting horse, a young horse on the improve,” McEvoy said of Induna.

“Manawanui is the class horse in the race, but my horse adds another dimension to the race and a little bit of the unknown.

“If this fellow (Manawanui) doesn’t switch off and run it out strongly, I could be steaming home late.”

2011 Victoria Derby Market Movers – The One’s the Punters Want

  • #7 Induna ($6 into $4.60 Luxbet) – Geelong Classic win and Snowden factor, also looks best able to handle the distance especially if Manawanui is found out over the 2500m
  • #9 Scelto ($101 into $61 Luxbet) – Still a roughie but one worth a look in for exotics, ran third in the Vase last-start and history says that’s the way to come into a Derby
  • #15 Rapidus ($201 into $101 Luxbet) – Yes they are triple figures but so was Rebel Raider who won the 2008 Derby at 100-1, Cummings sure does know how to train a Derby winner too so definitely don’t discount

If you think Manawanui will step up to the 2500 metres and defeat this field, then back them to Win at Luxbet and if they run second get your money back as a bonus refund bet valued up to $250 at Luxbet!

Or if it is an exotic bet that tickles your fancy wanting to include one of the longer-priced market movers into a Victoria Derby Trifecta or First Four for value, hit up Luxbet for their Best Tote Exotics + 5% Bonus open on every Flemington race this Saturday!
