Supermare-in-the-making Atlantic Jewel is the deserving 2011 Wakeful Stakes favourite, Mark Kavanagh’s undefeated filly seeking her fifth straight career win at Flemington on Saturday, so for punters seeking more value from their Victoria Derby Day bets on this one, one bookmaker is offering exclusive ‘Without The Favourite’ markets.
Scheduled to run as Flemington Race 3 at 12:40pm (AEDST), the $300,000 Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) is always an enticing addition to the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s opening meeting, and this year is no exception.
All Wakeful Stakes talk, and conversation on the upcoming 2011 Crown Oaks next Thursday for that matter, is on one filly and one filly only with last-start Thousand Guineas winner Atlantic Jewel odds-on favourite in the Luxbet markets for both races.
Twelve months ago Mike Moroney’s Brazilian Pulse took out the Wakeful Stakes – Crown Oaks double and this year that feat looks set to be repeated by Fastnet Rock three-year-old Atlantic Jewel.
She hasn’t seen further than a mile, she has had just four starts and she has only raced in Group company once, but Atlantic Jewel is a true turf talent and her $1.30 price at Luxbet to win the Wakeful Stakes on Saturday is fair.
Of the 10-filly Wakeful Stakes 2011 field only one other is under double-figures in the betting, the Graeme Rogerson-trained New Zealand raider Dowager Queen.
Drawn in barrier six, jumping one on the outside of Atlantic Jewel, Savabeel filly Dowager Queen is due to be ridden by Craig Williams who was aboard her last start when she finished an unlucky second to Gliding in the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.
Dowager Queen is a far more experienced racehorse with 15 starts for four wins and seven placings to her name, but she is the underdog going into the Wakeful with her $6.50 price at Luxbet.
Bart Cummings’ Ethereal Stakes winner Gliding follows at $10 before the Wakeful Stakes odds blow out with the likes of Dan Morton’s Perth filly Bliss Street ($17), the John Thompson-trained Pane In The Glass ($21) and the bred-to-stay daughter of Zabeel Rahveel ($31).
With a small field and an odds-on favourite with freakish ability that looks near impossible to beat, the Wakeful Stakes betting may not offer the value all punters are after.
That’s why Australia’s best online bookie Luxbet are offering their exclusive Wakeful Stakes Favourite Out markets.
Bet on Flemington Race 3 this Saturday as if Atlantic Jewel were not in the field and get a better price on your other favourites in the fillies-only showdown.
Dowager Queen is the obvious top-elect excluding Atlantic Jewel and her price in this special Luxbet market is $2.40, a much more backable quote than Atlantic Jewel’s $1.30.
