Victoria Derby Day 2011 Fields, Favourites & Race Day Preview

It’s Melbourne Cup Carnival time and as is tradition the elite racing action kicks off at Flemington Racecourse with an outstanding nine-race Victoria Derby Day program this Saturday – the fields, favourites and previews for which are detailed below.

There is no shortage of superstars set to strut their stuff for Victoria Derby Day 2011, the meeting headlined by four Group 1 showdowns.

A multitude of elite level heroes are engaged across the Flemington race fields for Saturday including recent Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed taking on five other Group 1 winners in the $1 million Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m), champion colt Sepoy out for their incredible fourth thoroughbred major in the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), a glamourous line-up of fillies and mares lead by Gai Waterhouse’s stable ace More Joyous in the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m), and then of course Golden Rose conqueror Manawanui topping this year’s capacity field for the $1.5 million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).

In between the highlight races are five other Group features not to miss including the $250,000 Group 3 The Lexus Stakes (2500m) where many stayers will have a final fling at making the 2011 Melbourne Cup including Caulfield Cup runner-up Green Moon, and the $300,000 Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) where freakish filly Atlantic Jewel vies for her fifth career win before the Crown Oaks next week.

As you can see there is a race for every fan and a market for every punter at Luxbet this Victoria Derby Day; check out the full Flemington Race Fields & Program below so you don’t miss a minute of the action.

2011 Victoria Derby Day Fields, Program and Previews

Flemington Race 1 – Inglis Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) – 11:20am (AEDST)

  • Punters Pick: #1 Galah – $1.60 @ Luxbet

A nice three-year-olds’ race to kick off the day, a good consolation prize for those that didn’t quite get to the Guineas or Derby. Peter Snowden’s last-start stakes winner Galah out for their third on the trot having come from last to first in outstanding style in a Caulfield Cup Day black-type, being by Redoute’s Choice says the mile here is ideal.

  • Punters Pick: #3 Green Moon – $3.30 @ Luxbet

D-Day for a number of Melbourne Cup hopes here, win and get in, loose and the dream is over. The Williams’ clan are on fire after Wednesday’s Bendigo Cup quinella, can Caulfield Cup runner-up Green Moon put in a similar effort here and salute?

  • Punters Pick: # 1 Atlantic Jewel – $1.25 @ Luxbet

Traditional Crown Oaks lead-up, a tidy field of fillies here and while there has been an obvious push from connections to continue with Thousand Guineas winner Atlantic Jewel instead of spelling here as per Kavanagh’s wishes, she looks the kind of filly that has the grit and ability to go through this and onto the Crown Oaks without expending.

  • Punters Pick: #1 Sepoy – $1.26 @ Luxbet

Shockingly low price for a shockingly good colt. Sepoy has the star appeal, the speed, the form, the three Group 1’s and the $3.5 million in prize money to say he won’t get beaten here. But one thing he doesn’t have is the best Flemington straight track form with his one win here good but not brilliant. Masthead looms on the inside and Foxwedge is keen.

  • Punters Pick: #12 Rekindled Interest – $3.70 @ Luxbet

Unluckiest of runs when third in the Cox Plate last start, and without taking credit away from the winner, probably should have gotten the Group 1 there. Vase winner last year was found out in the wet in the Derby 12 months ago, finally there time? No easy assignment with Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed and a heap of Melbourne Cup hopes.

  • Punters Pick: #1 Manawanui – $2.40 @ Luxbet

Has the form, the draw, the class – can Manawanui put in one more massive run for their grand final? And can they make the 2500metres theirs? History says a Vase placegetter has the upper-hand, see the ideally-drawn Collar. Favourite deserves there spot at the top of the odd but this is more even then the betting suggest with plenty of smokys including Perfect Punch.

  • Punters Pick: #6 Sister Madly – $3.70 @ Luxbet

Another cracker with dual Stradbroke winner Black Piranha, last-start winners Temple Of Boom and Neeson, and the perpetually unlucky Phelan Ready. But it is Sister Madly that catches the eye, her second to More Joyous last-start was terrific, she is a definite class mare and is weighted to win this.

Day to finish on a high with plenty of cult horses here including former Hong Kong galloper Happy Zero, former Golden Rose winner Toorak Toff, Magic Millions standout Torio’s Quest and Brisbanite Woorim. Launay has plenty of followers but is this based on form or the Snowden factor?
