Sepoy – running hot for 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes

Sepoy has won 9 of 10 starts going in to the Coolmore Stud Stakes 2011

Trainer Peter Snowden has labeled Sepoy a champion, a term not many have use about the three-year-old for probably one reason – Black Caviar.

It is hard to use the word twice in the same era and Sepoy is very unlucky to be racing at the same time.

Yet the record of the son of Elusive Quality is not far off the mark having won nine of his ten starts going into the 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes – horse profile

#1 Sepoy (barrier 8) 56.5kg

  • Three year old chestnut colt
  • Record: 10 starts 9 wins 1 second 0 third.
  • Winning distance range 1000m to 1200m
  • Best win: 2011 Group 1 Golden Slipper  1200m at Rosehill
  • Trainer: Peter Snowden, Warwick Farm
  • Jockey, Kerrin McEvoy.
  • Latest price Luxbet $1.26 fav

He has started favourite in nine of those ten starts and won the other start when $8 by three and a half lengths.

As a juvenile he did what only the elite achieve by winning the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper.

In doing so he joined the club of Courtza, Manikato Bounding Away and Johns Hope.

Sepoy has also done what many Golden Slipper winners in recent times have failed to do – go on and win as three-year-olds.

Sepoy isn’t only doing that, he is undefeated at the age in five starts and each time he’s started odds-on and never looked in any doubt.

The highlight this season was when he easily beat the older horses in the 2011 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 30.

Uncharacteristically, he was tardy early but quickly went about his business winning easily.

The only doubt about Sepoy coming into the 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes is that he has been in training for a long time, since June.

This is his final assignment for the spring and trainer Peter Snowden is confident Sepoy will be at his best.

Some have questioned his ability down the Flemington straight.

He may not have been as impressive as when going around turns, yet he is still two from two down the Flemington straight.

Bookmakers don’t give away their money and have Sepoy again in the red to become the 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner.
