2011 Myer Classic Odds & Betting – More Joyous Firming Favourite

Despite drawing the ominous barrier 13 for her one-day-out from Halloween assignment, Gai Waterhouse’s class mare More Joyous is the firming favourite to take out the Myer Classic 2011 at Flemington’s Victoria Derby Day this Saturday.

One of the eight support races on a bumper nine-race Flemington card, the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) is scheduled to run as Race 7 at 3:45pm (AEDST).

It is a beauty of a field lining up with More Joyous the headline female miler of the 17 engaged, 16 to start with Guiseppina the sole emergency.

She faces plenty of stiff competition, however, with the likes of defending champion Sacred Choice, ace filly Mosheen, triple Group 1 winner Yosei and Tristarc Stakes placegetter Response.

More Joyous has saluted in five previous Group 1’s and she certainly has the mile record to deserve her firm favouritism, but it will have to be a stunning run from her wide gate as she only just defeated Sister Madly in the final stride of the Tristarc last time out.

The punters won’t hear anything about a Myer Classic upset, however, More Joyous heavily supported in the Luxbet odds in from $2.60 to $2.50 and now paying $2.40.

There are only two other Myer Classic 2011 hopes at single-figures:

  • #16 Mosheen ($5 into $4.80 Luxbet) – Robert Smerdon’s boom filly is the obvious second pick and most likely to upset the favourite here, was a game second to Crown Oaks top elect Atlantic Jewel in the Thousand Guineas last time out, before which she won the Edward Manifold Stakes over the Flemington mile by three lengths carrying 55.5kg, she has barrier 12 for Saturday but the speed to overcome, the mile record to say this is her pet distance and on 49kg is very hard to go past
  • #4 Response ($9 out to $9.50 Luxbet) – Lots to like about this multiple Group 1 winner, namely her favourable barrier three draw, her good effort from out wide to run third in the Tristarc last-start, also a winner over this track and distance but has been found out by More Joyous by big margins before

The next shortest-priced of the Myer Classic runners at Luxbet is then Majestic Music ($17) from the Caulfield Cup winning stables of Leon Macdonald, followed closely by Yosei ($18) out to improve on her disappointing spring so far.

Other runners at $20 or under in the Myer Classic markets include the Tony Noonan-trained Varenna Miss ($19) who goes to the mile for the first time, Sydney visitor Hurtle Myrtle ($19), Doncaster Mile winner Sacred Choice ($20) and Lady Lynette ($20) drawn well in four where she should get a nice run – and if any of these get up to place then it will add great value to the Trifecta.
