Prominent and deserving 2011 Victoria Derby favourite Manawanui has fared well in the barrier draw for Saturday’s three-year-olds’ classic at Flemington, the Ron Leemon-trained galloper coming up with gate eight in the capacity field.
The 16-starter plus two-emergency final field for the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) was released earlier this morning, and now the barriers have also been drawn and announced ahead of the headline race of the weekend.

- #11 Cornell ($61 Luxbet) – Barrier 3
- #13 Zabeelionaire ($18 Luxbet) – Barrier 5
- #1 Manawanui ($2.30 Luxbet) – Barrier 8
Topping the Victoria Derby markets at Luxbet is six-time winner and one-time Group 1 hero Manawanui at a quote of $2.30.
Saturday will be a genuine test for the Oratorio gelding as not only has Manawanui never been to the 2500-metres, but this will also be their first time up against a full field with the biggest field size they have raced in previously being nine horses.
Gate eight then should suit the progressive stayer, the widest barrier they have jumped and won from previously being seven.
Boosting the confidence in camp Manawanui heading into Saturday is the fact a number of their main dangers have drawn further out in the field.
Peter Snowden’s Geelong Classic winner Induna is the $6 second favourite for the Derby at Luxbet, the Elusive Quality gelding having drawn barrier 12.
This gate shouldn’t be an issue for Induna and jockey Kerirn McEvoy, however, as the smart three-year-old on the Geelong Classic from barrier 11 of 15 on October 19 to earn their Victoria Derby assignment.
The next-best fancied hopeful in the Victoria Derby odds is $8 third-favourite Niagara.
Gai Waterhouse’s smart Sydney colt has come up with the ‘visitor’s gate’ in the feature coming up with 18 of 18, into 16 should the emergencies not get a run.
Niagara’s horror Derby draw added to Waterhouse’s woes this morning after her glamour mare More Joyous also drew awkwardly for her Saturday assignment coming up with barrier 13 for the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).
Other horses in the top end of the Victoria Derby betting markets at Luxbet have had mixed results in the barrier draw.
Fourth favourite at a quote of $12, Trent Busuttin’s Kiwi raider Sangster is drawn one outside the favourite in barrier nine, while last-start Norman Robinson Stakes winner Sabrage has suffered a blow with gate 16 subsequently drifting out from $13 to $14 to claim an upset Victoria Derby result.
Meanwhile, following the Victoria Derby barrier allocations one runner that has come right into contention is Collar.
Paying juicy odds of $18 at Luxbet, the Robert Hickmott-trained Collar was at one time topping the Derby future markets based on their staying blood and solid performances this season.
After getting beaten three lengths when third to Meethaq in a mile race on Thousand Guineas Day, however, Collar was abandoned by the punters.
Last Saturday they finished two and a half lengths away second to Manawanui in the Moonee Valley Vase and history shows that Vase placegetters have a better record in the Victoria Derby than the winners.
