Melbourne Cup Unlikely for 2011 Bendigo Cup Scratching Lamasery

A start in the country’s most prestigious race, the 2011 Melbourne Cup at Flemington next Tuesday, is looking more and more unlikely for David Vandyke’s Commands gelding Lamasery after the Sydney stayer suffered another setback being scratched from today’s Bendigo Cup with a leg infection.

Lamasery has been scratched from the 2011 Bendigo Cup field

Running at 3:00pm (AEDST) this afternoon, the $200,000 Listed Bendigo Cup (2400m) is being used by a number of Melbourne Cup 2011 hopes who are looking for a win and weight penalty to move them up the order of entry for the famous two-mile handicap.

Lamasery was one of them, currently sit 32nd on the order of entry for the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) and weighted on 51kg which already includes a 1kg penalty for their win in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Handicap (2400m) back on September 24.

After a cut to their leg became infected, Lamasery (barrier 13) has since been scratched from the 2011 Bendigo Cup field leaving 12 horses in contention, the favourite of which is the Lloyd Williams-owned At First Sight in from $3.30 to $2.80 at Luxbet.

The fellow Robert Hickmott-trained runner for Williams Tanby is the firming second elect at a quote of $3.80.

At First Sight is already assured of a Melbourne Cup start sitting 20th on the order of entry, the imported Galileo stallion last seen running second to December Draw in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on September 17.

Tanby, runner-up in both the Herbert Power Stakes and Geelong Cup this month, is in serious danger of missing out on a Melbourne Cup start as they currently sit 38th in the ballot and would need to win impressively today and attract at least a 1.5kg weight penalty to get a chance of running in the big event.

Meanwhile, in the latest Melbourne Cup betting markets at Luxbet Lamasery is paying $201, fair odds considering their leg needs treatment meaning they are likely to be turned out for a spell.
