Genuine Group 1 Quality In Mackinnon Stakes Field

The 2011 Mackinnon Stakes field didn’t quite make the capacity of 18 but it certainly got to a high level of quality with 14 runners ready for Race 5 at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day this weekend.

There are a fantastic mix of runners in the field that all have very different paths to get here.

Some were Melbourne Cup bound but had plans changed when they either couldn’t get the two miles or fell short on the order of entry, other’s were never considering the Cup and were specifically targeted for this race all along.

If you look at the Mackinnon as a conciliation for horses not able to get in the Melbourne Cup then it’s one hell of a conciliation to have,  it’s a $1 million Group 1!

The race is full of our current crop of stars and plenty of horses racing in great form.

Looking through the final field for the Mackinnon Stakes you can quickly see that this is definitely worthy of being a group 1 contest.

There are horses out of the Cox Plate such as Wall Street who ran a barnstorming fourth from deep in the field, Efficient a former Melbourne Cup champion that was forced wide on the turn, Glass Harmonium who missed the jump and just couldn’t find his rhythm, Sincero who is still perhaps a question at the 2000m and Rekindled Interest which ran an impressive third.

From the Caulfield Cup we couldn’t have a better addition, the champion herself Southern Speed having her final run of this preparation.

Others of note include Foreteller who was last at the run in his previous run and gobbled them all up to win with ease, The Verminator who’s been racing well all year and is probably unlucky not to already be in the Melbourne Cup field.

Throw into the mix Ginga Dude and Midas Touch and the Mackinnon Stakes could well be the race of the program this Saturday at Flemington.
