James McDonald will be hoping for a quick return...
Premiere Victorian horseman Peter Moody kicked off what he hopes will be a sensational day of big wins at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day with his progressive three-year-old filly Torah taking out the second with a beautiful victory in the $100,000 Listed Essendon Jeep Stakes(1600m).
Formerly known as the Alexandra Stakes, the Essendon Jeep Stakes win ended what has been a frustrating run of unlucky starts for Moody’s Spinning World filly Torah, who came into today’s showdown on the back of a narrow second place finish at Moonee Valley.
Going out as an $8 chance in the Luxbet Cox Plate Day Race 2 markets, Torah was ridden by the stable’s ace jockey Luke Nolen – who is preparing to ride superstar mare Black Caviar in the fifth for what will likely be the undefeated queen’s 15th straight turf triumph.
With a track that suited, a tempo that was to her liking and a sweet ride from Nolen, Torah was finally able to break through for her maiden win from seven starts and show her potential heading into next year’s Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.
Race favourite was Twilighting who didn’t get away the best but went forward early before finding herself posted out deep.
It was $101 roughie Beautiful Boudica who set the pace in the Essendon Jeep Stakes, the tempo genuine.
There was only around three lengths separating the field when they came around the final turn from home, Daniel Morton’s 59.5kg topweight Bliss Street making up a lot of ground out wide.
Torah was able to get into the clear with around 200 metres left to travel and from there she was never going to get run down.
Bliss Street pulled out a fast finishing late burst to cross a length away second while the Tony Vasil-trained Classic Elle came in to cross for third finishing off the winning Essendon Jeep Stakes Trifecta.
“She’s found a track where the pattern hasn’t gone against her,” Moody said after the win.
“She has a nice upside and is a filly with a bit of promise but we’re not shooting for the stars.
“We’ll look towards a Group 3 for her, maybe something a little better in the autumn.
“Might push her out to a mile and a quarter which she’ll get the way she races.”
