Dunaden Gets Melbourne Cup 2011 Weight Penalty

Yesterday’s explosive Geelong Cup winner Dunaden has risen from 14th to 8th on the elimination order for the highly-anticipated 2011 Melbourne Cup after Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carptenter handed them a half-kilo weight penalty for their Geelong win.

Bauer will not race again before the 2011 Melbourne Cup and could miss out on a start in the race

Emulating last year’s Geelong Cup – Melbourne Cup winner Americain in winning the Geelong Cup at their first start on Australian soil as the topweight of the race, the French-trained Dunaden has also been awarded the same penalty for the victory as Americain did 12 months ago.

Prepared by Mikel Delzangles, who was once the foreman for Americain’s trainer Alain de Royer Dupre, six-year-old Nicobar stallion Dunaden looked very dominant when running down and beating home this year’s Geelong Cup favourite Tanby in Wednesday’s 2400-metre feature.

Now firmly in contention for the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November, Dunaden is due to carry 54.5kg in classic showdown, which includes their 0.5kg penalty.

“Dunaden was most impressive winning the Geelong Cup yesterday after sustaining a searching run from the back of the field with 58kg and accordingly I have elected to penalise him 0.5kg in the Melbourne Cup for that victory,” Carpenter said.

“Dunaden’s countryman Americian won the Geelong Cup with 58kg last year and I also lifted his weight from 54kg to 54.5kg in the Melbourne Cup which he went on to win.

“I could not justify an increase of great than 0.5kg for Duanden thought as he is yet to win at Group 1 or 2 level and the four horses weighted above him in this year’s race, Americain (58kg), Jukebox Jury (57kg), Descarado (56kg) and Midas Touch (55kg), have performed to a higher level.”

Because of their Geelong Cup success, Dunaden has also shot up the futures markets for the famous two-mile handicap.

Americain is still the sole horse in the Melbourne Cup odds at Luxbet under double-figures paying $8 to become a dual Melbourne Cup winner this spring, but Dunaden now occupies the second line of betting at $10 – equal odds with Anthony Freedman’s German import Lucas Cranach.

Following these top three elects is Green Moon at $13 having been crunched in from their earlier Melbourne Cup price after the Lloyd Williams-owned galloper ran an eye-catching second to Southern Speed in the Caulfield Cup.

Next in the Luxbet markets are Lion Tamer at $14 who contests the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley this Saturday, fellow Cox Plate hopeful Shamrocker ($15), and then European raiders Bauer and Jukebox Jury paying $17.

The Luca Cumani-trained Bauer has been the best-backed Melbourne Cup hopeful over the past 24 hours following their slashing third in yesterday’s Geelong Cup.

Their Geelong Cup placing saw the old grey galloper qualify for the Melbourne Cup 2011, nine-year-old Bauer still far from assured of a start sitting 42nd on the order of entry.

Bauer, who won the 2008 Geelong Cup before going down a nose to Viewed in that year’s Melbourne Cup clash, pulled through yesterday’s run well but connections have confirmed they will not run the horse again and it will take a number of horses above them in the ballot to drop out of contention for Bauer to get a second shot in the Melbourne Cup.

“We’ll just have to hope there is horses who fall out,” stable rep Charlie Henson said.
