Descarado Scratched from 2011 Cox Plate Field

Breaking news regarding the Cox Plate 2011 field for this Saturday is that the Gai Waterhouse-trained Descarado has officially been scratched from the showcase Moonee Valley showdown.

Descarado

Descarado has been scratched from the 2011 Cox Plate

Earlier this week Waterhouse advised Racing Victoria stewards that her former Caulfield Cup hero and last-start Caulfield Stakes winner Descarado was suffering minor swelling to their near-side hind leg.

On a lameness scale of one to five Descarado’s injury was only rated one and Waterhouse was initially confident that the son of High Chaparral would recover in time to contest Australasia’s richest weight-for-age feature.

Waterhouse this morning, however, contacted RVL’s chief steward Terry Bailey to say she was withdrawing Descarado from the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

“The stable just advised us that they’ll be supplying a vet certificate to say that the horse isn’t running on Saturday,” Bailey said.

As Descarado has come out, it has paved the way for Cox Plate first emergency Avienus to gain a start.

Yesterday Cox Plate second emergency Yosei was withdrawn due to lameness in her near-foreleg, the triple Group 1 winning mare now in doubt for the remainder of the spring, meaning that if there are any further scratchings then it will be a below capacity Cox Plate field lining up again this year.

There has not been a full Cox Plate field of starters since 2005.

Descarado was drawn in barrier nine and had blown out in the Cox Plate odds at Luxbet from $15 to $26.

Cox Plate betting is still lead by Helmet who has firmed in their price to salute as the 49.5kg lightweight in from $3.50 to $3.30.

Descarado’s scratching means the Peter Snowden-trained star three-year-old comes in from barrier 11 to 10 on Saturday as they vie for their fourth elite level career success.

The Mark Webb-trained Avienus is drawn in barrier 14, the six-year-old Reset mare coming off a solid second behind Descarado in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Having run sixth to dual champion So You Think in last year’s Cox Plate, Avienus is rated a $61 chance in the updated Cox Plate markets for 2011 at Luxbet.
