Black Caviar Horse Betting Specials – Schweppes Stakes 2011

This Saturday Peter Moody’s superlative sprinter Black Caviar will vie for her awe-inspiring 15th straight career success and punters have to go back five decades to find a shorter-priced favourite in an Australian Group race, so below the Races.com.au team take a look at the 2011 Schweppes Stakes betting specials for Black Caviar next race.

After coasting to her 14th win on the trot first-up this spring in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m), where Black Caviar jumped at $1.07 in the betting, Australia’s fastest horse has opened at the incredibly short price of $1.04 at bookmakers around the country, including our preferred Luxbet, for her Cox Plate Day assignment at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Black Caviar

Black Caviar is set to start the shortest-priced favourite in an Australian Group race in 50 years on Saturday

Her illustrious career has captured the attention of a nation and once again Black Caviar’s freakish talent will be put on display when she defends her title in the $300,000 Group 2 Schweppes Stakes (1200m).

To the dismay of many, just four other horses have accepted to take on the ‘Black Flash’ this weekend, pushing Black Caviar into legendarily short odds in the Luxbet markets.

Black Caviar has started under $2 in all 14 of her career runs and wins to date, but her Schweppes Stakes price will be her shortest yet.

The last horse to jump at such exorbitant odds in a feature race on Aussie soil was Valerius who saluted in the 1961 Chipping Norton Stakes at 33/1on, equivalent to $1.03 in today’s markets.

The record, however, belongs to the mighty Ajax, who also holds the Australian record for most consecutive metropolitan wins.

Foaled in 1934, champion Heroic stallion and Australian Racing Hall of Famer Ajax won 18 consecutive races during 1938 – 1939 before jumping as the odds-on favourite at a quote of $1.02 (40/1 in those days) in the 1939 Rawson Stakes.

Ajax’s winning streak ended that day as he went down a half-length to Spear Chief.

If Black Caviar continues going the way she has been, she is likely to surpass Ajax on both accounts.

While her price is petite, it is deservingly so and Moody is confident his wondermare is in even better form than when she defeated Kartua Queen by four and a half lengths in the Schillaci on October 8.

“She certainly hasn’t gone backwards,” Moody said.

“She is in really good shape and I’m looking forward to the race.”

Moody may be looking forward to the race, and little doubt the racing fans are as well, but with Black Caviar at a nearly unbackable price what for the punters?

Black Caviar will win Moonee Valley Race 5 on Saturday, so taking her at $1.04 through Luxbet is really like getting a 4% bonus on your stakes!

And, there will always be the punters out there that have a bet on Black Caviar just to say they bet on the best.

“She is becoming Australia’s superannuation horse,” Glenn Munsie from TAB Sportsbet said.

“People back her just to say they had a bet on her.

“Over the last two years, we have had a customer turn up on-course for the sole reason of backing Black Caviar every time she races.

“He had $28,000 on her at Caulfield to win about $2,000. His parting words (that day) were ‘I’ll see you in a couple of weeks at Moonee Valley’.

“He will probably have an even bigger bet on Saturday.”

At Luxbet, however, there are a range of exclusive Schweppes Stakes 2011 betting specials so you can get more value from your best on Black Caviar.
