Descarado – The 2011 Cox Plate drifter – can he win it?

Update: Descarado scratched from the 2011 Cox Plate field.

Descarado has been the big drifter in 2011 $3m Group 1 W S Cox Plate(2040m) betting after swelling was discovered in his near hind leg just days before the race.

Racing Victoria vets will exam the gelding on Friday to rule whether Descarado can take his place in the Cox Plate of 2011.

His trainer Gai Waterhouse says the problem is minor but Luxbet have drifted Descarado out from$15 to $19 as punters shy clear of the 2010 Caulfield Cup winner.

2011  W S Cox Plate – Horse profile.

2 Descarado (barrier 9) 59kg

  • Five year old bay gelding
  • Record: 21 starts 5 wins 6 second 1 third
  • Winning distance range 1200m to 2400m
  • Best win: 2010 Group 1 Caulfield Cup 2400m at Caulfield
  • Trainer: Gai Waterhouse, Randwick
  • Jockey, Nash Rawiler.
  • Latest price Luxbet $19.

Descarado’s chances of being the 2011 Cox Plate winner depends on his health.

He showed he was back to his best form winning the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at his latest start and on that win he is a bright hope.

Descarado is best when in front, as is 2011 Cox Plate opponents Glass Harmonium and Helmet.

That may ensure a quick speed in the 2011 Cox Plate which could prove to be the undoing of the front runners.

He has never raced at Moonee Valley which some horses like but others despise.

Where Descarado could gain an advantage is if it rains and the track is muddy.

His best win in the Caulfield Cup was in the mud and he loves it that way.

If Descarado makes it to the barrier stalls, one must presume he is fit to go.

In a year when the field lacks proven star quality, Descarado is some chance.

And if it rains he will be well worth an eachway ticket.
