Tanby Tops Geelong Cup 2011 Odds

The Lloyd Williams-owned and Robert Hickmott-trained Tanby has opened at the top of the odds for the 2011 Geelong Cup on Wednesday, the in-form Galileo five-year-old seeking success in the handicap showdown with the hopes of moving a step closer to a Melbourne Cup 2011 start.

Americain

Last year's Geelong Cup winner Americain went on to take out the Melbourne Cup

Tanby was last seen running a gallant second when defeated in the final stride by Shewan in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m), before which they won a 2500 metre handicap at Moonee Valley.

For their win at the Valley Tanby jumped from barrier five and they were in gate six last-start; they have again drawn favourably for Saturday coming up with barrier six for the $225,000 Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m).

With the ideal lead-up preparation, form over the distance and good starting position Tanby has opened the $3.50 Geelong Cup betting favourite at Luxbet.

Last year’s Geelong Cup winner Americain went on to take out the world’s richest handicap, the Melbourne Cup (3200m), at their next start and Tanby is also out for the same double.

Currently sitting well down the order of entry in 56th spot on the latest Melbourne Cup ballot, Tanby looks in doubt of a start in this year’s edition of the ‘race that stops a nation’ and is rated a $61 shot in the Melbourne Cup odds at Luxbet.

There are four other horses at single-figure odds in the Geelong Cup field of 13 this year.

Other 2011 Geelong Cup Hopes at Single-Figure Odds:

  • #1 Dunaden ($5.50 into $4.80 Luxbet) – Guaranteed a Melbourne Cup start sitting 14th on the ballot, French-trained galloper prepared by Mikel Delzangles makes their Aussie race debut here, drawn in eight with Craig Williams to ride as the 58kg topweight
  • #2 Bauer ($5 out to $5.50 Luxbet) – Luca Cumani’s former Melbourne Cup runner-up yet to pass the 2011 Melbourne cup first ballot clause for this year, the popular grey galloper comes off a sixth in the Herbert Power and won the Geelong Cup back in 2008 before their second to Viewed in that year’s Melbourne Cup
  • #5 Above Average ($9 Luxbet) – Sits 47th on the Melbourne Cup ballot, Antony Freedman’s High Chaparral five-year-old hasn’t won a race since March last year, drawn in gate 11
  • #6 I’m Jake ($9 Luxbet) – Pins gelding comes off a smart two and a half-length victory in the Listed Ansett Classic (2413m) at Mornington on a Heavy (9) track, has the rails run from barrier one which is the gate Americain saluted from 12 months ago
