A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Gai Waterhouse’s last-start Caulfield Stakes winner Descarado is under a cloud of doubt for the 2011 Cox Plate on Saturday, the injured galloper to be examined by Racing Victoria vets this Friday before being cleared to run in the Moonee Valley showcase.
The High Chaparral five-year-old was found to have swelling to his near hind leg, Descarado missing a crucial Moonee Valley gallop on the course proper this morning due to low level lameness.
“The injury is consistent with the horse kicking out in his box,” Chief steward Terry Bailey said.
“Certainly Gai Waterhouse believes the horse will still be right to run in the Cox Plate.”
A former Caulfield Cup champion, Descarado was one of 18 final acceptors for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) this morning and drew barrier nine for the feature.
Waterhouse remains confident that Descarado will be fit to run in the Cox Plate 2011, with their lameness at the bottom of the scale (one of five).
“There’s pressure on us because everyone is here wanting to see the horse perform…it means you take precautions, you make sure he’s 100 per cent sound on the day,” Waterhouse said.
Despite the doubt over Descarado passing the veterinarian inspection on Friday morning, the horse is still one of the top fancies in the Cox Plate betting markets at Luxbet.
Peter Snowden’s genius three-year-old Helmet ($3.50) and Kiwi galloper Jimmy Choux ($3.60) are the clear-cut favourites, but Descarado is still at the top-end of the odds at a quote of $15.
Meanwhile, the John Bary-trained Jimmy Choux was disappointing in their track gallop at the Valley this morning for the Breakfast with the Stars event, the horse overshadowed by their workout partner Rekindled Interest.
Jim Conlan’s recent Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner Rekindled Interest showed connections exactly what they wanted to see heading towards the Cox Plate.
Rekindled Interest is currently paying $11 to win the Cox Plate through Luxbet after drawing ideally in barrier three.
