Heartbreak Due For Some 2011 Cox Plate Nominations

With the 2011 Cox Plate Final Field due to be announced tomorrow let’s take one final look at the nominations to see which horses are likely to earn themselves a spot.

At this stage of the process there are 36 names still on the list but in reality the actual number with a chance probably sits at around 16.

The final say in the process rests with the Moonee Valley race Club which has been locked in talks all day to decide the final makeup of the Cox Plate field.

It’s worth remembering that why there is capacity for 14 runners that doesn’t mean they will meet that mark, only horses they deem worthy will gain a start.

In 2011 though the nominations seem to be more even than ever so there is a good chance we will see the full contingent of 14 runners.

In the nominations list below there are a couple of notable names that definitely won’t be running so you can scratch the following from the list.

  • Alcopop is out of form and has returned back to Adelaide.
  • Americain will run in the Moonee Valley Cup instead.
  • Smart Missile is in the paddock and will be spelled for the rest of the spring.
  • Southern Speed will run in the Mackinnon and not back up from her Caulfield Cup win.

There are others not in the running as well but those are the main player sot be aware of.

At the other end of the scale though there are five horses battling to get themselves a spot.

As it stands it’s believed that 11 of the 14 positions are virtually filled leaving three more up for grabs.

Obviously five doesn’t go into three so two of the following will miss out.

  • Efficient
  • Avienus
  • Pinker Pinker
  • Wall Street
  • Yosei

Organisers say their decision is based mostly on the performances in the last 12 months however that hasn’t stopped a big plunge coming in for Efficient in the last 48 hours.

That’s despite the fact he’s only raced twice since his last win, the Turnbull Stakes of 2009.

In reality we’ll simply have to wait for the Cox Plate field to be announced but below are the nominations as they currently stand.
