Gutsy Punters Take 2011 Cox Plate Gamble With Efficient

Some bookmakers are set for a big collect even before the 2011 Cox Plate jumps with a massive amount of money coming in for former Melbourne Cup champion Efficient in the pre-post markets.

Bets of this type stand regardless of whether the horse makes the field or not and that’s where the issue lies for a group of punters taking a very big gamble.

As it sits now there are 11 horses virtually guaranteed a spot in the 2011 Cox Plate field, a race which carries maximum capacity of 14.

Efficient

Efficient sits near the bubble of the 2011 Cox Plate field.

Efficient is not one of those 11 though, in fact he’s part of a group of five all fighting for those final three spots.

Potentially making things even more difficult is the fact the connections of Southern Speed are also now considering a Cox Plate start following her Caulfield Cup victory.

That would leave only two positions remaining for the other five, assuming organisers even elect to start the full 14.

The Cox Plate entry is different to many races in that it’s totally at the discretion of organisers as to how big the field as and what horses earn their place.

Joining Efficient in battling for an entry are Avienus, Pinker Pinker, Wall Street and Yosei.

In the past special emphasis is given to the performance of horses over the last 12 months more so than what they’ve produced previously in their careers.

For a horse such as Efficient that proves to be a bit of a problem given his last win was the 2009 Turnbull Stakes and before that it was the 2007 Melbourne Cup.

In fact Efficient has only run twice since that victory in October 2007 finishing 10th in the Underwood Stakes and 8th in the Turnbull Stakes.

That hasn’t stopped some punters though with a variety of bookmakers reporting some big bets on Efficient to win the 2011 Cox Plate.

One took $5000 at odds of $101 and his price has continued to drop from there.

Even yesterday the money continued to flow in at the TAB.

“As soon as we opened this morning two of our smartest punters parted with bets of $2500 each-way at $31; as a result Efficient is now into $26 and, on the back of the weight of money, we expect him to gain a start,” TAB Sportsbet’s Dale Kennerson said.

At online bookmaker Luxbet he has also been backed into a $26 fixed price where he is equal 10th in the market.

That also suggests he will earn a  start but it will be touch and go for a few punters already sweating on the result.

If you want to take Efficient or indeed any other runner in the 2011 Cox Plate head across to Luxbet now and register with the code BONUSBET.

For the rest of spring it will earn you a free bet matching your initial deposit worth anywhere up to $500!
