Geelong Cup Field Has It All To Play For In 2011

The 2011 Geelong Cup field has a lot to live up to this year as they seek to repeat the success the event has had in recent times.

Just last year Americain passed through this race on his way to winning the 2010 Melbourne Cup title in tremendous circumstances.

A group of 13 will be out to replicate his performance in 2011 and for many of them success in the Geelong Cup is there only option.

With so much interest, especially from overseas, in the 2011 Melbourne Cup spots in the field are a hard thing to earn.

In fact for many of this year’s Geelong Cup runners they are relying on this event to squeeze their way into the Melbourne Cup field.

With that in mind there’s no doubt it’s going to be a frantic 2400m with $225,000 up for grabs at Group 3 level.

The good thing about Geelong is that it’s a wide surface so every horse should get its chance up the straight.

Among those expected to show a sight are the imports Dunaden from France as well as Bauer for Luca Cumani.

They will have a tough time of it though as they carry 58kg and 56kg respectively, a fair chunk more than the 53kg being lugged by the majority of the field.

They are also coming up against a good group of locally trained stayers boasting solid recent form.

Tanby is perhaps the best example, he finished second to Shewan in the Herbert Power Stakes, a race where Bauer crossed in sixth.

Also with a good last start run is I’m Jake, he won the Listed Ansett Handicap at Mornington however it is a big jump in class to the Geelong Cup.

Back In Black is another interesting runner, John Steffert brought him across from New Zealand specifically for the Melbourne Cup but he desperately needs to win here to qualify.

Spechenka comes in for Ben Ahrens after just missing out on the Caulfield Cup as first emergency.

Others worth mentioning include Hume, Red Eye Special and Perfect Pecs.
