The three-year-old colt won today’s 2011 Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse ahead of second place-getter Sabrage and third place-getter Niagara.
Moroney admitted that he had originally not considered sending Sabrage to the Victoria Derby until his third place finish in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes last month.
“I wouldn’t have picked him as a Derby (horse),” Moroney said.
“It was the Stutt Stakes that changed our mind.”
Sabrage has now claimed both his career victories at Caulfield Racecourse, with his first being in the Swettenham Stud Handicap as a two-year-old.
“He’s had two wins out of two starts here now,” Moroney said.
“This horse here is a pretty mature type, (he) won a race at two.”
Jockey Damien Oliver was impressed with the result after coming into some trouble at the home turn.
“We were getting bounced around a bit coming into the turn,” Oliver said.
Oliver feels Sabrage will be well suited to the 2011 Victoria Derby’s distance.
“He ran out the 2000 quite strong today,” he said.
“It appears to be a reasonably open race so he’s as good a chance as anybody I’d think.”
