Lucas Cranach Drifts in Caulfield Cup 2011 Betting

Reported injury concerns with the Freedman’s highly-rated German import Lucas Cranach has the punters going cold on the galloper to upset December Draw in the 2011 Caulfield Cup on Saturday, their odds drifting out considerably in the markets.

One of the most talked about and bet on horses in the field for the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2500m) this year, which is due to jump at 4:05pm (EDT) on Saturday as Race 8, Lucas Cranach occupies the second line of Cup betting at Luxbet.

Lee Freedman is confident Lucas Cranach will run in the 2011 Caulfield Cup on Saturday

Having drawn to perfection in gate three for their much-awaited Australian race debut, Lucas Cranach was originally at a quote of $7.50 in the Caulfield Cup odds at Luxbet.

Still the only other contender at single-figures besides Mark Kavanagh’s stayer-in-the-making December Draw who has eased out from $2.25 to $2.35, Lucas Cranach is now out to $9 with the news they have been suffering from a hoof abscess.

After being whisked away from the Werribee International Horse Centre earlier this week to be homed at the Freedman’s private stable at Rye, whispers started over whether there was an issue with the horse.

Lee Freedman, who has been looking after the import since their arrival in Australia, confirmed to Racing Victoria stewards that Lucas Cranach had developed an abscess but that it was only minor, had burst on Tuesday, and had not affected their Caulfield Cup preparations.

“He has a minor abscess on his foot,” Freedman said.

“It’s responded well (to treatment).

“He hasn’t missed any work.”

Lucas Cranach worked this morning in a gallop which pleased Freedman and had him confident heading towards Saturday’s race.

“He’s just had a canter this morning and he’s back in his box,” Freedman said.

However, Lucas Cranach will have to undergo a mandatory inspection by Racing Victoria vets on Friday before being cleared to race in the Caulfield Cup 2011.

“I’m quietly confident he’ll be there on Saturday,” Freedman said.

Racing Victoria’s chief steward Terry Bailey confirmed that the inspection was only a safeguard and that there should be no reason for them to deny Lucas Cranach a Caulfield Cup start.

“As far as Mr Freedman is concerned the horse is fine and will be there on Saturday,” Bailey said.

“He let us know the horse worked fine today and we will only be looking at it as a precaution.”

Freedman also confirmed that winkers would be added to Lucas Cranach’s gear for Saturday to help the horse settle in the 2400 metre handicap.

“We’re going to give him winkers,” he said.

“He was beautifully relaxed (when he trialled with them).

“(Jockey) Corey (Brown) was very pleased.”

Brown confirmed that with the winkers on at a gallop at Werribee earlier in the month, Lucas Cranach had performed sharply.

“The winkers made a big difference,” Brown said.

“He felt a lot sharper with the winkers on.”

Wary to take on a horse with any kind of injury concerns this close to a race as big as the Caulfield Cup, regardless of what the connections and trainers say, the punters have slowed down on Lucas Cranach and are starting to come for a number of other runners in the field.
