Two of the four emergency runners accepted for this Saturday’s Caulfield Cup 2011 field are more likely to run in one of the day’s other Group race features with Lucky Eighty Eight and Midnight Martini also paid up for in the $125,000 Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m).
Sitting as the second and fourth emergencies for the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m), the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Lucky Eighty Eight, and Mark Kavanagh’s Midnight Martini are both $201 outsiders in the Caulfield Cup odds at Luxbet.
Needing at least two horses to scratch out from the world’s richest 2400 metre handicap, both gallopers also feature in the 2011 David Jones Cup field as a backup.
Set to run as Caulfield Race 7 at 3:20pm (EDT), one event before the 2011 Caulfield Cup on Saturday, this year’s David Jones Cup field features a total of 14 gallopers.
Lucky Eighty Eight, who was last seen running a decent ninth when beaten four lengths by Shewan in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield last Saturday, is rated an $8.50 chance in the David Jones Cup odds at Luxbet.
Kavanagh’s Street Cry mare Midnight Martini, who ran fourth in the Herbert Power last-start, is also at single figures in the markets at a quote of $7.50 having drawn well in barrier three.
David Jones Cup betting is currently lead by Red Colossus who remains the steady $4.80 favourite through Luxbet despite drawing barrier 12.
Greg Eurell’s Testa Rossa five-year-old Red Colossus comes off a credible sixth place finish to Secret Admirer in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick, the genuine galloper tipped to improve as they step up to the 2000 metres on Saturday.
Other single-figure chances in the 2011 David Jones Cup are:
- Platinum Passion ($6 Luxbet) – In the visitor’s gate 14 of 14, Michael Moroney’s classy Redoute’s Choice mare comes off a win at the track and distance from September 24 where they overcame the same awkward gate (14 of 14) to beat home subsequent Herbert Power Stakes winner Shewan by a length and a half
- Foreteller ($6.50 Luxbet) – Chris Waller-trained Dansili four-year-old import sees Caulfield for the first time but has winning form up to 1810 metres in Europe and the imports have been setting the form this spring
- Extra Zero ($8.50 Luxbet) – David Hayes’ Danzero gelding has the run on the rails in barrier one, failed when seventh to Caulfield Cup favourite December Draw in the Turnbull Stakes last-start, but prior to that they were impressive when beating a quality field over 1700 metres at Caulfield
- Base ($9 Luxbet) – Robert Hickmott-trained Zabeel five-year-old, bred for this distance and has a good record over the 2000 metres and at Caulfield, definite chance that knows how to win with the best strike rate of the field – 50%
