Sixteen three-year-olds have been accepted for the 2011 Norman Robinson Stakes field on Caulfield Cup Day this Saturday, one of the crucial lead-up races for gallopers heading towards the 2011 Victoria Derby.
The $125,000 Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) is due to jump at 1:20pm (EDT) as Race 4 of 10 at Caulfield.
Likely to start at the top of the Norman Robinson Stakes odds at Luxbet after drawing ideally in barrier two is the Mick Price-trained Costly Commitment.
The Encosta De Lago colt comes off a third in the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington on October 2, where they were drawn in gate nine of 16, and is the shortest-priced Norman Robinson Stakes hopeful in the futures markets for the Victoria Derby at Luxbet.
Held at Flemington on Saturday October 29, the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the $1 million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) is the premier staying event for three-year-olds during the spring.
Costly Commitment is the fourth favourite in the Victoria Derby odds at Luxbet sitting at a quote of around $11, a price that will firm should they be successful on Saturday.
UCI Stakes winner Isopach is also set to back up in the Norman Robinson Stakes, John Thompson’s Magic Albert gelding drawn well mid-field in barrier seven as the equal 56kg topweight of the field with the Robert Heathcote-trained Trump.
Written Tycoon three-year-old Trump came off good form in Brisbane earlier this season before their disappointing seventh when beaten over nine lengths in the UCI Stakes, and has suffered an early blow for Saturday drawing the ‘visitor’s gate’ 16 of 16.
Still, premier Queensland horseman Heathcote remains hopeful they can return to form and race competitively over the 2000 metres.
“There has to be a question whether he’ll run the trip,” Heathcote admitted.
“In his first run in Melbourne he suffered several interferences before the home turn and became unbalanced.
“I’ve been happy with his work since.”
Other top Victoria Derby betting fancies engaged in the Norman Robinson Stakes this year include Leon Corstens’ Zabeel colt Zabeelionaire who ran fourth in the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 30, the Peter Moody-trained Reset gelding Vatuvei and Michael Moroney’s Charge Forward colt Sabrage who was third in the Bill Stutt.
