David Jones Cup Entries 2011 Melbourne Cup-Bound

The staying horses will be out in force on Caulfield Cup Day this Saturday with a number of Melbourne Cup 2011 hopefuls racing in one of the meeting’s major support races, the 2011 David Jones Cup.

Registered last spring as the Coongy Handicap, this year the $125,000 Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) attracted 36 nominations who are fighting for a spot in the capacity 16-starter plus four emergency final field.

Efficient is one of six 2011 David Jones Cup nominations for Robert Hickmott

One trainer with a dominant hand in the David Jones Cup 2011 nominations is Robert Hickmott who has six entries in the feature.

Included among the Lloyd Williams-owned contingent is 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient, who is the 60.5kg topweight of the David Jones Cup entries.

Zabeel eight-year-old Efficient was last seen running eighth when beaten five lengths by this Saturday’s Caulfield Cup favourite December Draw in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 2.

Following Efficient in the weights and David Jones Cup order of entry are their stablemates Midas Touch (59kg) and Linton (57kg).

Midas Touch was originally set to contest the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Saturday’s meeting, however, connections chose not to accept them and target the $2.5 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley instead.

The import is also a possible 2011 Melbourne Cup chance, Midas Touch sitting at $15 in the Melbourne Cup odds at Luxbet while Linton is a $71 Melbourne Cup hope.

Rounding out Hickmott’s hopefuls are then Azkar, Base and Green Moon.

Hickmott is sweating on the official 2011 Caulfield Cup final field announcement this afternoon at 3:30pm (EDT) to see whether his Newcastle Gold Cup winner Green Moon will be handed the final spot in the 16-starter line-up over equal 17th balloted gallopers Macedonian and Spechenka.

Along with Green Moon, a number of other David Jones Cup nominees will not accept having already made the 2011 Caulfield Cup including last-start JRA Cup winner Dream Pedlar, the Michael Kent-trained four-year-old Domesky and classy South Australian mare Southern Speed.

Naturalism Stakes placegetter Lucky Eighty Eight is also dually entered for both Cups on Saturday and is likely to run in the David Jones Cup as they will only be third or fourth emergency for the Caulfield Cup at best after finishing a disappointing ninth to Shewan in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) last Saturday.

Meanwhile, other 2011 Melbourne Cup hopefuls and their Luxbet ante-post odds nominated for the David Jones Cup on Saturday include New Zealand raider Booming ($81), the David Payne-trained Praecido ($201), Caulfield Cup acceptor but non-qualifier Midnight Martini ($201), Starcraft four-year-old Cosmonaut ($301) and Warrnambool galloper Hissing Sid ($301).

The David Jones Cup was last year won by Kiwi galloper Ginga Dude who went on to run a game third behind dual Cox Plate hero So You Think in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.

Stay tuned to Races.com.au for the Caulfield Cup Day race acceptances, including those for the 2011 David Jones Cup, which are due out tomorrow.
