Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
After his impressive win in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes last weekend at Caulfield Shewan has been penalised a kilo and a half for the 2011 Emirates Melbourne Cup.
He originally had just 50kg for the $6 million feature race so at 51.5kg he still comes in relatively well weighted based on his current form.
Shewan now sits in 43rd spot on the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup but trainer Robert Smerdon is refusing to confirm whether or not that will be his desired path.
The team are insisting the horse still has a lot to learn and they have picked out the autumn of 2012 as where we will see his best.
That being said though attacking the Melbourne Cup this year when he’s in this kind of form must be a real consideration, especially given the Black And Bent dream is over leaving Shewan as Smerdon’s only chance of a starter.
Chief Handicapper of Racing Victoria Greg Carpenter said it was the manner of Shewan’s victory as well as those who he beat that earned him the 1.5kg penalty.
“Shewan gave a strong staying performance to beat Tanby with Ebor Handicap winner Moyenne Corniche closing late to take third place in the Group 2 race,” he said.
“The penalty is the same assigned to Alcopop when he won the race in 2009 and to Master O’Reilly when he was victorious in 2007.”
Also making Melbourne Cup progress out of the Herbert Power Stakes was the second placed Tanby which has jumped to 55th in the order of entry from his second placing.
As can be imagined Shewan has been a big mover in 2011 Melbourne Cup betting and the markets at Luxbet indicate just how far he’s come.
He now sits in equal 19th spot at $41, a great price given that’s next to the likes of Moyenne Corniche which he beat last start.
