Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Trainer Robert Smerdon has revealed that today’s 2011 Herbert Power Stakes winner Shewan may not go to the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup this year, despite his win guaranteeing him entry into the race.
Shewan won the Herbert Power Stakes 2011 by a head in front of place getters Tanby and Mayenne Corniche.
The Herbert Power Stakes is renowned for being a valuable indication of a horse’s winning chances in the Melbourne Cup each year, with Rogan Josh winning the race before his Cup victory in 1999 and Shocking placing in the race before his 2009 Cup win.
However, Smerdon made it clear after the race that a Melbourne Cup 2011 start for Shewan was only a possibility.
“He’s an autumn sort of spring next year,” Smerdon said.
“It’s not (certain) we go to the Melbourne Cup.
“He’s still progressing and maturing.
“It’s up to the owners to discuss and we’ll just play it by ear.”
Shewan is also nominated for the 2011 Caulfield Cup but will not make the field.
“The Melbourne Cup probably fit him better,” Smerdon said.
