Cox Plate 2011 Named As Likely Next Race For Helmet

Helmet

Caulfield Guineas winner Helmet will likely go to the Cox Plate

Trainer Peter Snowden will now look towards a 2011 Cox Plate start for today’s Caulfield Guineas winner Helmet.

The three-year-old put his bad habits behind him to produce a faultless victory in the Caulfield Guineas 2011.

Snowden is now confident that Helmet will make an appearance in the $3 million Cox Plate on October 22, 2011, at Moonee Valley, however, admits he will need to discuss the plans over with his superiors.

“My thoughts are that he should be there,” Snowden said after the race.

“I’ve got to talk to my team.

“He’s certainly a very valuable colt.”

Snowden named Helmet as the second best horse he has ever trained.

“He’s probably up there,” he said.

“He’s the second best; Sepoy’s the best.

“The amount of improvement this horse has done in the last month is amazing.

“When he won it was fantastic, just the best feeling.”

Darley Australia’s managing director Henry Plumptre gave credit to Helmet’s trainer after the Caulfield Guineas win.

“We know a Snowden horse will come to a Group one with no stone left unturned,” Plumptre said.

“I thought he might get caught in the last 50 (metres) but that’s the benefit of having someone like Peter and Paul Snowden train for you, they leave nothing in the tank.”

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy admitted he was unsure whether Helmet would be able to hold off Manawanui before the line.

“I thought Manawanui was going to catch me… he’s a hard horse to hold off,” McEvoy said.

“(But Helmet’s) got breathtaking ability and that’s what he showed.”

The jockey revealed he would start his preparation for making the 49.5 kilogram weight Helmet has been allocated for the Cox Plate straight away.

“I’m sure we’ll worry about that in the next few weeks but the diet starts tonight I suppose,” he said.
