While much of the focus from the Peter Moody stables at Caulfield Guineas Day this Saturday will be on resuming megastar Black Caviar in the Schillaci Stakes, another Moody-trained mare is capturing the punters’ attention with King’s Rose opening favourite to win the Toorak Handicap 2011.
Running as Caulfield Race 6 at 2:40pm (EDT), the $350,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) drew a crack final field of 14 middle-distance gallopers lead by Moody’s former Kiwi mare King’s Rose.
Undefeated down under having won her opening two starts this season, Redoute’s Choice four-year-old King’s Rose is also a Group 1 winner back in her homeland having won the NZ Thousand Guineas over the mile last November.
Toorak Handicap odds opened at our preferred online bookmaker Luxbet yesterday, King’s Rose the $4.60 favourite after drawing the inside alley to become the fourth mare in five years to win the feature, and the third on the trot following on from Allez Wonder (2009) and More Joyous (2010).
One of the big Toorak Handicap 2011 betting market movers over the past 24 hours is a stablemate to the favourite, the fellow Moody-trained Luen Yat Forever cunched in from $8 to $6 at Luxbet.
Also drawn favourably in gate three, like King’s Rose Luen Yat Forever is heading towards a run in the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 23.
The imported Honours List six-year-old will be third-up for the season on Saturday and comes off an eye-catching fifth to Toorak Toff in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on September 24.
There three other Toorak Handicap 2011 hopes at single-figure odds to win:
- Fast Clip ($7.50 into $6.50 Luxbet) – Snippetson four-year-old out to give trainer Gai Waterhouse back-to-back Toorak Handicap wins
- Toorak Toff ($6.50 out to $8 Luxbet) – Out to become the fourth horse since 1986 to complete the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes – Toorak Handicap double
- Torio’s Quest ($9 Luxbet) – Trainer has given the ultimatum of a top three finish in the Toorak or no Cox Plate 2011
Meanwhile, another horse getting love from the punters in the Toorak Handicap markets is triple Group 1 winning mare Yosei.
Yosei remains at a juicy double-figure price in the Toorak Handicap odds at Luxbet but has been well-backed in from $31 to $26, the Stuart Webb-trained mare looking to improve on her two disappointing runs this season but one of the only runners to have won at the track and distance.
