Herbert Power Stakes 2011 Odds – Caulfield Guineas Day Betting

Three Group 1 races headline Melbourne’s Caulfield Guineas Day programme this Saturday, but punters looking for guide to the 2011 Caulfield Cup will also be paying close attention to the Herbert Power Stakes betting.

Offering a ballot exemption for the world’s richest 2400-metre handicap, Saturday week’s Caulfield Cup, the $200,000 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) final field features 16 gallopers.

Surprisingly, the clearcut favourite in the current 2011 Herbert Power Stakes odds at Luxbet is not nominated for any of the spring majors including the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Sitting at the top of the Herbert Power Stakes betting markets is the Robert Hickmott-trained Tanby.

An ultra consistent five-year-old that has won six of their 12 starts to date, Tanby comes off an emphatic last-start victory in a 2500m handicap at Moonee Valley on September 10 and is the $2.90 top elect for Saturday’s showdown through Luxbet.

Only three other gallopers are at single-figure odds in the Herbert Power Stakes markets with:

  • Lucky Eighty Eight ($5 Luxbet) – Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahara-trained six-year-old looked in great form when running third in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) last start, sees the 2400m for the first time but has won over 2100m before
  • Shewan ($5.50 Luxbet) – Robert Smerdon’s five-year-old steps up to Group company for the first time having earned a shot at the Herbert Power after a brave second to Platinum Passion in the Perri Cutten Plate (2000m) at the track on September 24
  • Anudjawun ($9 Luxbet) – Shaun Dwyer-trained Toowoomba galloper is a genuine stayer and the distance will suit

Meanwhile, Luxbet have seen some money come in for one of the two Brian Ellison-trained raiders in the Herbert Power Stakes field, Saptapadi firming in from $18 to $16.

As one of the three 57kg top-weights of the field along with stablemate Moyenne Corniche and fellow international, the Luca Cumani-trained Bauer, history is against Saptapadi on Saturday.

The last Herbert Power Stakes winner to carry more than 54.5kg to victory in the past 15 years was Freemason (56.5kg), which also works against Master O’Reilly (56kg) and Lucky Eighty Eight (55kg) this year.
