This Saturday a bumper nine-race programme will take place at Caulfield Racecourse for Guineas Day 2011, and while much of the attention will be focused on the spruik three-year-olds facing off in the Caulfield Guineas, the top fillies’ race of the day will be the 2011 Thoroughbred Club Stakes.
Running as Caulfield Race 2 at 12:10pm (EDT), the $125,000 Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) has drawn a small, select final field of just nine acceptors.
As expected the Neville Layt-trained Karuta Queen was withdrawn from the Thoroughbred Club Stakes at acceptance stage with connections opting to give her a shot at superstar sprinter Black Caviar in the $200,000 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m).
Topweight of the Thoroughbred Club Stakes is the Anthony Cummings-trained Emerald Downs who is allocated 56.5kg under the set weights conditions of the race.
Drawn in barrier four with Nash Rawiller booked for the ride, Chruchill Downs filly Emerald Downs comes off a last-start fourth to Miss Stellabelle in the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last Friday night.
One filly that beat Emerald Downs home in the Champagne Stakes, runner-up Platelet, is also set to back up in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes on Saturday.
Darren Weir’s Strategic three-year-old Platelet is yet to finish worse than three in her four career starts to date.
Jumping from the ideal barrier three draw with Michelle Payne continuing her association, Platelet is likely to be one of the best-backed contenders in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes betting at Luxbet as she also has form against some of this season’s best three-year-old fillies after running an eye-catching third behind Thousand Guineas-bound Celebrity Girl in a Listed feature at Flemington last month.
The other drawcard Thoroughbred Club Stakes contender is Gerald Ryan’s highly-rated Hollyweird, the Corey Brown-mount drawn in gate five.
Snitzel three-year-old Hollyweird comes off a second place finish to Karuta Queen in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on September 17 and will be racing at Caulfield for the first time on Saturday.
Rounding out the 2011 Thoroughbred Club Stakes field and barriers are locally-trained Offer suffering an early blow with the ‘visitor’s draw’ (barrier nine), the Matthew Dale-trained Canberra raider Not A Dancer with the inside alley, Mick Price’s last-start Seymour winner The Fairy’s Kiss (barrier seven), lightly-raced Elvstroem filly Miss Rendina (barrier six), and unraced fillies Pontigton (barrier two) and To Be Honest (barrier eight).
