Melbourne Cup Declarations 2011 – 79 First Acceptances

Seventy-nine stayers have been paid up for at first declaration stage for the 2011 Melbourne Cup today, including 14 internationally-trained horses lead by defending champion in ‘the race that stops a nation’, Americain.

Americain is one of 14 internationals still in contention for the 2011 Melbourne Cup

The entries for Flemington’s revered $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) were cut from 163 nominations to 79 first acceptances, with updated markets to be released by Luxbet shortly.

Reigning Melbourne Cup winner Americain is the 58kg top-weight of the remaining hopefuls, followed in the 2011 Melbourne Cup weights by Mark Johnston’s fellow European raider Jukebox Jury who sits No. 1 on the Melbourne Cup ballot thanks to their last-start success in the Irish St Leger.

Both Americain and Jukebox Jury have been well-supported in the pre-field Melbourne Cup 2011 odds at Luxbet.

Other internationals in the 2011 Melbourne Cup first declarations include four from Luca Cumani  including former runner-up Bauer and fellow grey Manighar; the Godolphin-owned Modun and Lost In The Moment; the Ed Dunlop-trained Red Cadeaux; and Mikel Delzangles’ French galloper Dunaden who is nominated for the Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield this Saturday.

Melbourne Cup betting favourites that feature in the first acceptances include:

  • December Draw – Mark Kavanagh’s exciting import is undefeated at Flemington with four wins including their maiden elite level in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) last Sunday
  • Lion Tamer – In-form Kiwi galloper won the Victoria Derby last spring and stormed into Cup calculations with a win in the Underwood Stakes last-start, races again this Saturday in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m)
  • Lucas Cranach – German import to be prepared by Anthony Freedman, occupies the third line of Melbourne Cup betting despite not having seen Australia or the two-miles before
  • Midas Touch – One of six Melbourne Cup first acceptors from Robert Hickmott, the Galileo four-year-old impressive when running third in the Underwood and races again on Saturday in either the Herbert Power or Caulfield Stakes
  • At First Sight – Another in-form Lloyd Williams-owned Galileo four-year-old, last seen running a brave second in the Naturalism and is another dual nominee for the Herbert Power – Caulfield Stakes this weekend
  • Absolutely – Michael Kent-trained Redoute’s Choice mare finished an eye-catching sixth in the Turnbull on Sunday, AJC Oaks winner with form up to 2400 metres
  • My Kingdom Of Fife – Chris Waller’s 2011 Cox Plate-bound star, won the Craven Plate with ease at Randwick last Saturday

The Melbourne Cup field limit is 24 horses and some of the above early fancies still sit outside of the top 24 in the current order of entry including December Draw (37th) and At First Sight (30th).

Other notable runners not yet guaranteed a  Melbourne Cup start include the Bart Cummings-trained German import Illo (28th),  Peter Moody’s one-time Caulfield Cup favourite Lights Of Heaven (61st) and the Chris Waller-trained The Verminator.

The Verminator moved up to 36th spot in the Melbourne Cup ballot after receiving a 2kg penalty from Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter for their upset victory in The Metropolitan at Randwick last Saturday.

Noteworthy defectors from the Melbourne Cup entries include Maluckyday, Littorio, Scarlett Lady and Harris Tweed who are all sidelined for the rest of the spring carnival; the Peter Moody-trained former Kiwi mare King’s Rose and Group 1 winning Western Australian galloper Playing God who are both targeting the Cox Plate 2011; and champion Australian hurdler Black And Bent who has been sent to the paddock ahead of an international jumps campaign.

Below is the complete list of 2011 Melbourne Cup first acceptances, the updated ballot and weights; Melbourne Cup second declarations to be taken on October 24.
