2011 Thoroughbred Club Stakes to Lose Drawcard Nomination

This Saturday Caulfield Racecourse will come to life with the running of a crack nine-race programme for Caulfield Guineas Day 2011, one of the meeting’s Group showdowns to lose its drawcard entry with Karuta Queen likely to withdraw from the $125,000 Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m).

Karuta Queen

Karuta Queen his likely to withdraw from the Thoroughbred Club Stakes in favour of taking on Black Caviar in the Schillaci Stakes on Saturday

The 2011 Thoroughbred Club Stakes drew 15 three-year-old fillies at nomination stage on Monday, the list of hopefuls lead by Neville Layt’s highly-rated daughter of Not A Single Doubt Karuta Queen.

A $1.59 million earner, Karuta Queen broke an eight month drought with her first win since January’s Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on September 17, prompting Layt to hand his filly the imposing assignment of taking on superstar sprinter Black Caviar next race.

Reigning Horse of the Year Black Caviar vies for her 14th consecutive career victory on Saturday in the $200,000 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m), Karuta Queen set to accept for this feature and not the Thoroughbred Club Stakes.

With Kartua Queen out of contention, the next best-rated runners of the Thoroughbred Club Stakes entries are the Anthony Cummings-trained Emerald Downs coming off a fourth to Miss Stellabelle in the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last Friday night and Gerald Ryan’s Snizel filly Hollyweird who ran second to Karuta Queen in the Heritage Stakes last-start.

Other notable 2011 Thoroughbred Club Stakes nominations include Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra’s grey filly Jessica Rose, local Caulfield-trained Offer from the stables of Heath Conners and Darren Weir’s consistent daughter of Strategic Platelet who ran second in the Champagne Stakes.

While the final field for Saturday’s feature event, the 2011 Caulfield Guineas, was released today the remaining acceptances including those for the Thoroughbred Club Stakes stay open until tomorrow.
