Caulfield Stakes 2011 Nominations Feature Cox Plate & Cups Hopes

A host of major Cox Plate and Spring Cups hopes have been nominated for the 2011 Caulfield Stakes this Saturday, the weight-for-age showdown one of three Group 1 features on a crack Caulfield Guineas Day programme.

Lion Tamer

Melbourne Cup co-favourite Lion Tamer is one of the headline entries for the 2011 Caulfield Stakes

The $400,000 Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m), formerly known as the Yalumba Stakes, was last year won by the then Bart Cummings-trained champion So You Think on way to their second Cox Plate victory.

This year the Caulfield Stakes 2011 attracted 17 nominations, a number of which will be out to emulate the mighty So You Think in winning the same Caulfield Stakes – Cox Plate double.

Early futures betting at Luxbet on the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), to run at Moonee Valley on October 15, is lead by in-form Kiwi galloper Jimmy Choux ($5) and Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas favourite Helmet ($8).

The next shortest-priced Cox Plate hope, who is also nominated for the Caulfield Stakes, is Lion Tamer ($11).

Murray Baker’s talented New Zealand-based four-year-old was winner of the Victoria Derby last spring and became a dual Group 1 winner in Australia last start when taking out the Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 17.

Lion Tamer is also the $9.50 co-favourite to win the Melbourne Cup 2011 through Luxbet along with Sunday’s Turnbull Stakes conqueror December Draw.

Ace hoop Hugh Bowman was to have reunited with Lion Tamer for the first time since winning the Victoria Derby for the Caulfield Stakes, but will now miss the prized ride due to suspension.

Robert Hickmott has nominated four stablemates for the 2011 Caulfield Stakes lead by early $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) fancy At First Sight.

Galileo import At First Sight, last seen running a brave second to December Draw in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m), was scratched out of the weekend’s racing including the Turnbull Stakes but is set to return for the Caulfield Stakes.

The other Lloyd Williams-owned Caulfield Stakes nominees this year are Zabeel five-year-old Base, last-start Newcastle Gold Cup winner Green Moon and Underwood Stakes third placegetter Midas Touch who sits on the third line of Caulfield Cup betting at a quote of $10 through Luxbet.

Also featuring prominently in the Caulfield Cup odds at Luxbet are fellow Caulfield Stakes’ early entries Absolutely, the AJC Oaks winning mare coming off a sixth in the Underwood, and popular South Australian galloper Alcopop who ran a brave second to Rekindled Interest in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley in their first Melbourne run for the season and who ran second to So You Think the Caulfield Stakes 12 months ago.

It is a top-class list of Caulfield Stakes nominees for 2011, other notable horse including:

  • Gai Waterhouse’s reigning Caulfield Cup winner Descarado
  • The Peter Moody-trained, one-time Caulfield Cup favourite Lights Of Heaven
  • Exciting WA galloper Playing God who ran third in yesterday’s Turnbull Stakes and who is also nominated for the Group 1Toorak Handicap (1600m) at the same meeting
  • The Luca Cumani-trained former Chilean racehorse Sahara Sun making their Australian race debut
  • Beaten Epsom Handicap favourite Sincero
  • Whobegotyou who won the 2009 edition of the race before finishing third to So You Think 12 months ago
