The Verminator has raced ahead to win the Group 1 The Metropolitan, which was the final feature of Epsom Handicap Daytoday October 1, 2011.
The five-year-old gelding raced away down the inside of the final straight to win the race from second place-getter Hawk Island and third place-getter Lamasery.
The Verminator won the Wyong Cup on September 2 before finishing fifth in the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup last start.
Trainer Chris Waller achieved the quinella in the 2011 The Metropolitan with his two talented geldings The Verminator and Hawk Island.
“It as a great ride, got into a good spot and Hawk Island he was out three wide with no cover,” Waller said.
“They both ran terrific.”
Waller’s other runner, Bellagio Wynn, fell at the 650 metre mark in what was always destined to be his final career start.
The trainer became emotional when he was told the horse appeared uninjured following the race.
“That is a bonus (winning the race), bringing the horse back safely is what we’re here for,” he said.
Jockey Craig Newitt was aboard The Verminator for his winning run.
“Chris is one of the greatest trainers in Australia,” Newitt said.
“He looked like he was going to win a long way out.
“He got rolling himself.”
The Verminator has now won seven of his 24 race starts and is nominated for a start in both the 2011 Caulfield Cup and 2011 Melbourne Cup.
