Secret Admirer wins the Epsom Handicap 2011

Secret Admirer has stormed home to win the $500,000 Epsom Handicapat Randwick Racecourse today.

The four-year-old mare put in a scintillating final sprint down the home straight to snare the lead from Pinker Pinker, who finished one and three quarter lengths behind in second.

Red Tracer held on for third, while Willy Jimmy past the post in fourth.

Secret Admirer went one better than she had done so far this preparation to win the Epsom Handicap, after posting two seconds and one fourth in her three previous runs this campaign.

This was the Dubawi mare’s second Group 1 of her career, with the horse winning the Group 1 Flight Stakes as a three-year-old on this day last year.

Trainer Grahame Begg had only lightly worked Secret Admirer coming into today’s race, since she raced over 1,500 metres in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes last weekend.

“That was just outstanding,” Begg said.

“She had a gallop last week.

“That was her work last week.”

The trainer did not confirm a next start for the winning mare.

“We’re going to decide which way to go,” he said.

Jockey Brenton Avdulla produced the winning ride aboard Secret Admirer and was overcome with emotion after the race.

“She’s been everything to me this little thing, it brought a tear to my eye,” Avdulla said.

“It was always the target to have her spot on for today and she was.

“I knew at the half mile that she was going to win.

“(Now it’s) onwards and upwards.”

Secret Admirer is now on track for her planned 2011 Cox Plate run at Moonee Valley on October 22, 2011.
