Doctor Doom has won the first Group 1 feature of Epsom Handicap Day today with a thrilling lead all-the-way ride from jockey Rod Quinn in the 2011 Spring Champion Stakes.
The three-year-old gelding finished second to Strike The Stars last start in the Group 2 Gloaming Stakes but proved too good for the rest of the field today, winning ahead of second place-getter Darci Be Good and third place-getter Sangster.
The Guy Walter– trained Doctor Doom jumped well from barrier five and surged to an early lead.
Darci Be Good made a late charge down the home straight but couldn’t quite bridge the gap and finished second by half a neck.
Walters admitted after the race that he had been concerned about whether or not Doctor Doom would be able to run 2,000 metres for the first time in the 2011 Spring Champion Stakes.
“You can never say don’t worry about the distance (because) I was,” Walters said.
The trainer was thrilled with the result, after almost choosing to spell the gelding following his last start.
“I almost spelled him after the Gloaming,” Walters admitted.
“He’s got a big future.
“The more I feed him the more he eats.
“He’s done nothing but improve.
“It’s a great thrill.”
Walters will now send the Domesday gelding to the paddock to give him a lengthy preparation for the autumn carnival next year.
“Definitely go for a spell and come back for the autumn and look at races like the Randwick Guineas,” he said.
Jockey Rod Quinn was equally impressed with Doctor Doom’s performance.
“He was tough enough at the end,” he said.
“He was good enough to win it was great.”
