Spring Champion Stakes 2011 Barrier Draw & Final Field

The top five ante-post betting favourites for the 2011 Spring Champion Stakes have all been accepted into the final field for the three-year-olds’ classic running at Randwick’s Epsom Super Saturday this weekend.

Strike The Stars

Strike The Stars will jump favourite in Saturday's 2011 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick

The $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), one of four Group 1 showdowns on the Randwick race programme for this Saturday, yesterday attracted a final field of 10 hopefuls.

Continuing to dominate the Spring Champion Stakes 2011 odds at our preferred online bookmaker Luxbet is the Anthony Cummings-trained Strike The Stars.

Coming up with a nice barrier four draw in the Spring Champion Stakes barriers, classy Savabeel gelding Strike The Stars is being given their first elite level assignment having shown great promise this season.

After an eye-catching third to Trusting when racing against a crack field of older rivals in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on September 3, Strike The Stars scored their first race victory last-start when beating home Doctor Doom in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill.

The Gloaming Stakes victory was an impressive one considering Strike The Stars was away awkwardly from the gates and had little early luck in the run.

As such, Strike The Stars is the firming Spring Champion Stakes betting favourite in from $2.90 to $2.70 at Luxbet.

There are four other Spring Champion Stakes acceptors at single-figure odds:

  • Darci Be Good ($6 Luxbet) – Last-start winner of the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle, big step up in distance to the 2000m which is a query, may be a mile-only horse but has run against and beaten many of their rivals here including favourite Strike The Stars in a 1400m handicap at Rosehill back in August
  • Ambidexter ($5.50 out to $6 Luxbet) – Peter Snowden-trained Commands colt won back-to-back races at Warwick farm before their third to Darci Be Good in the Spring Stakes, could hand Snowden successive wins following on from Erewhon 12 months ago
  • Rekindled Alliance ($6 Luxbet) – Has the far outside barrier 10, but enough distance to overcome, was second in the Spring Stakes and looked to be needing more distance, full brother to Group 2 AAMI Vase (2040m) winner Rekindled Interest so breeding says they will like this trip
  • Doctor Doom ($7.50 Luxbet) – Guy Walter’s promising gelding was second to Strike The Stars in the Gloaming which is actually the idea lead-up as last year’s Spring Champion Stakes winner Erewhon ran second to Retrieve in the 2010 Gloaming before turning the tables on them to win the Group 1 next start

Following the top-shelf five to round out the Spring Champion Stakes 2011 field and betting markets are Peter Moody’s last-start Mornington winner Godspeed ($16), Gloaming Stakes third placegetter King’s Pact ($21) on the rails, the Michael Kent-trained filly Vittoria (26), Kiwi raider Sangster ($34) who had no luck when eighth on the Gloaming and roughie of the line-up Black Jag from the Doomben stables of Peter Hulbert at $81 for an upset.
