Pane In The Glass Leads Flight Stakes 2011 Field, Barriers & Odds

This Saturday at Royal Randwick the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival’s Princess Series will come to a close with the 2011 Flight Stakes, the headline contender in the three-year-old fillies’ classic being the John Thompson-trained Pane In The Glass.

Pane In The Glass

Pane In The Glass is the 2011 Flight Stakes favourite at Epsom Super Saturday this weekend

Pane In The Glass came up trumps with the inside running from barrier one of 11 when the acceptances and gates for the $400,000 Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) were released by Racing Victoria yesterday.

Due to be ridden by ace Brazilian hoop Joao Moreira, also engaged to take the mount on The Metropolitan 2011 favourite Trusting at Epsom Super Saturday, Pane In The Glass leads the Flight Stakes odds at a current quote of $3.50 through Luxbet.

A daughter of Testa Rossa Pane In The Glass will be fourth-up for the season, her most recent run being second to Streama in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on September 17.

Prior to the Tea Rose Pane In The Glass was also beaten by Streama when fourth in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on September 3.

“She continues to thrive and I can’t wait to see her back at Randwick,” Thompson said of Pane In The Glass whose last start at the track produced a game second behind Helmet in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over the mile back in April.

“She’s got a big race win in her and hopefully that’s Saturday.

“We’re hoping for more speed in the race. She has been running well but the way the races have been run have been to her disadvantage.

“Back over a mile at Randwick on Saturday, it’s a bit more testing, and I think that’s when she’ll come into her own.

“This is her grand final and she’s still on an upward spiral.”

While Pane In The Glass is the easing favourite out form her opening quote of $3.70, the early Flight Stakes betting market mover at Luxbet is the Peter Moody-trained Hallowell Belle.

Starcraft filly Hallowell Belle, drawn just worse than midfield in gate six for Saturday, has seen plenty of early attention in the Flight Stakes odds having been backed in from $4.80 to $4.

The Victorian raider has not come via the traditional Princess Series of races in Sydney but has had her opening four season starts at home in Melbourne.

After winning first-up at Seymour, Hallowell Belle has finished a close second at her last three runs including behind this Friday night’s 2011 Manikato Stakes favourite Sepoy in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

Most recently she was beaten in the final stride by Bliss Street in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) and the punters seem to be rating this Melbourne form higher than the Sydney fillies’ races leading up to the Flight Stakes this year.

Close third-favourite in the Flight Stakes betting at Luxbet is the Guy Walter-trained Streama who is out wide in barrier 10 of 11 and paying $4.20 to secure her third straight success following wins in the Furious and Tea Rose Stakes.

The only other Flight Stakes 2011 acceptor at a single-figure quote to win is currently is the David Payne-trained Florentina at $9.50 who has been thereabouts all season with placings in the Silver Shadow, Furious and Tea Rose Stakes.

Having firmed in from $12 to $10 in the past day at Luxbet, Graeme Rogerson’s Dowager Queen (barrier 11) is also trailing closely in the Flight Stakes markets.

The three-year-old Savabeel filly prepared in New Zealand was last seen finishing five lengths away sixth to Streama in the Tea Rose Stakes, which was her first run in Australia since her fourth to Benfica in the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) in Brisbane during the winter.

Other notable Flight Stakes hopefuls and their Luxbet odds include Anthony Cumming’s Dane Shadow filly Shadow West ($12) drawn well in three, the David Vandyke-trained Choice Words ($13) coming off a close second to Disputes in the Listed Reginald Allen Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill last Saturday and surprise Stan Fox Stakes runner-up behind Manawanui Roma Giaconda ($16).
