Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Following the release of the Manikato Stakes 2011 final field and odds, the punters have started to shy away from race favourite Sepoy and are tipping an upset in the Moonee Valley Friday night feature with More Joyous the market mover.
The $500,000 Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) drew a final field of eight star sprinters lead by Peter Snowden’s ace colt Sepoy.
One of the most impressive juveniles in Australian racing history thanks to their Blue Diamond Stakes – Golden Slipper double last season, Elusive Quality three-year-old Sepoy is out for their third spring win on the trot following comprehensive victories in the Vain Stakes and Danehill Stakes.
Their imposing form, barrier one draw, and drop back from 58kg last start to just 52kg for Friday night thanks to the weight-for-age conditions of the Manikato Stakes saw Sepoy open the odds-on $1.90 Luxbet favourite.
With doubts emerging over the inside alley, Sepoy yet to race in open-age company or under race conditions at the Valley, they have since drifted to $2.10 to become the Manikato Stakes winner.
All the rage in the Manikato Stakes markets over the past day has been Gai Waterhouse’s resuming champion More Joyous.
Drawn in barrier four, More Than Ready mare More Joyous is undoubtedly one of Sydney, and Australia’s, most professional and consistent sprinter-milers.
She has 19 race starts behind her, which have produced 14 victories five of which have been at elite level, and it is this experience that the punters are favouring having backed More Joyous in from $3 to $2.80 at Luxbet.
More Joyous has seen Moonee Valley just once when she ran a game fifth to So You Think in last year’s Cox Plate (2040m) and races for the first time since a bog Randwick track saw her beaten nearly nine lengths when 11th in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile on April 16.

The Manikato Stakes 2011 betting trend has also been noticed at other bookmakers around Australia.
“We saw a huge rush of bets for More Joyous as soon as we opened the market,” Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan reported.
“The way the money is coming in, there will be little between her and Sepoy by the time they jump.
“We haven’t been able to find a punter to back Sepoy in his first crack against the older horses and he looks set to continue to drift, especially if Melbourne’s weather continues to deteriorate.”
