2011 Epsom Handicap Field & Barrier Draw

In what could prove to be an early disadvantage for race favourite Sincero in the Epsom Handicap 2011 at Royal Randwick this Saturday, Stephen Farley’s two-time Group 1 winner has drawn gate one of 18 with the release of the Epsom field and barriers today.

Sincero is the 2011 Epsom Handicap favourite despite concerns over their inside barrier draw

The feature race on a crack Epsom Super Saturday programme, the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) this year attracted a below capacity field of 18 gallopers.

Headlining the list of 2011 Epsom Handicap acceptors is four-year-old Sincero, the reigning Stradbroke Handicap hero coming off successive Sydney wins this season including their smart last-start effort to beat home Ilovethiscity in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1500m).

Having dominated Epsom Handicap betting at Luxbet since markets opened, Sincero sits at the top of the odds at a quote of $4.60 despite early concerns over their rails draw.

“It’s better than 16, but ideally if I’d picked it myself I would have picked three, four, five or six but we’ll run with it, we can’t change it,” Farley said at the Epsom Handicap barrier draw today.

There are three other Epsom Handicap acceptors currently at single-figure odds through Luxbet with Greg Eurell’s AJC Oaks placegetter Pinker Pinker ($7.50) coming up with one of Farley’s preferred barriers in five; last year’s Flight Stakes winner on Epsom Handicap Day Secret Admirer ($8) out wide in barrier 16 and the Chris Waller-trained Foreteller who is an early market mover in from $10 to $9.

Other notable horses in the 2011 Epsom Handicap field and their odds include:

  • Peter Moody’s in-form Kiwi import King’s Rose ($10) who came up with the extreme outside barrier 18 for her attempt at a third successive victory in Australia this season
  • Patrick and Wayne Webster-trained Thankgodyou’rehere in from $13 to $11 thanks to a nice gate two draw and their excellent last-start win in the Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400) at Rosehill
  • Gai Waterhouse’s Al Maher five-year-old King Lionheart looking a juicy early selection at $17 considering they come off back-to-back wins over 1500 metres at Rosehill including their success in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes last Saturday
  • Sacred Choice ($14) out in gate 17 for trainer Joe Pride, the Choisir mare out to improve on her disappointing recent form especially having been beaten 11 lengths when eighth to Sincero in the George Main Stakes last time out
