Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Friday’s Manikato Stakes Night nominations have been released by Racing Victoria including those for the evening’s three-year-old fillies’ feature, the Champagne Stakes 2011.
Eleven hopefuls make up the early entries for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) with the Clarry Conners-trained Sydney raider Satin Shoes sitting No. 1 on the ballot as the top-rated nominee.
One of the gun two-year-old fillies of last season thanks to victories in the Widden Stakes and Silver Slipper Stakes, Satin Shoes failed to impress when she stepped up to elite level company and could only manage to finish ninth behind ace colt Sepoy in the Group 1 Golden Slipper.
She resumed with a gritty first-up victory in the Listed Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 13, but Satin Shoes had been well beaten at her last two runs when eighth to Golden Archer in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) and eighth again this time to Buffering in the open-age Group 3 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on September 10.
Other notable fillies seeking some Black-Type in the Champagne Stakes 2011 include Peter Snowden’s daughter of Redoute’s Choice Glissade, the John Thompson-trained Motifs and the Anthony Cummings-trained Emerald Downs who comes off a game sixth to Bliss Street in the Thousand Guineas Prelude.
Emerald Downs is a long-shot chance of making the field for the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 12 and is currently paying $41 in the Thousand Guineas odds at Luxbet.
Meanwhile Patnicak Farm’s head horseman John Thompson has also nominated well-bred Starcraft filly Panhandle and Win For Layla for the Champagne Stakes on Friday.
Ballarat-based trainer Darren Weir also has multiple Champagne Stakes entries in Peronne Lady and Platelet.
The Champagne Stakes is one of four stakes races on the Moonee Valley race card for Friday night, the twilight programme headlined by the $500,000 Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) where Sepoy makes their debut against older horses and where Gai Waterhouse’s five-time Group 1 winning mare More Joyous resumes.
