Lionel Cohen’s Golden Rose failure Aeronautical will be given their chance to return to the winner’s stall this Saturday having been nominated for the Roman Consul Stakes 2011 at Randwick’s Epsom Super Saturday.
Promising Encosta De Lago three-year-old Aeronautical was one of nine nominees for this year’s edition of the $175,000 Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m), the race won by Brisbane raider Buffering 12 months ago.
Aeronautical won back-to-back races at Randwick earlier this year, including their blistering three and a half length success in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) on August 6.
They were found out, however, when beaten five and a half lengths finishing sixth of sixth in the Group 1 Golden Rose over 1400 metres at Rosehill last-start on September 10.
Back to Randwick and back to the 1200 metres, Aeronautical will likely start the Roman Consul Stakes betting favourite at Luxbet if accepted in the final field tomorrow.
Leading the Roman Consul Stakes order of entry is Anthony Freedman’s top-rated nominee Masthead.
Written Tycoon colt Masthead is an untapped talent having shown great potential running third to superstar Sepoy in Blue Diamond Stakes and fourth again to the Darley-owned champion in the Golden Slipper as a juvenile.
The resumed with a first-up fourth encountering the greatness of Sepoy once again, Masthead beaten less than two lengths in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 3.
They are set to benefit from the drop back in class of the Roman Consul and make a nice betting selection for the Win at Luxbet.
Other well performing three-year-olds nominated for the set weights showdown this Saturday include the John O’Shea Golden Rose fourth placegetter Foxwedge and Kris Lee’s up-and-coming Newcastle galloper Uate.
Ad Valorem colt Uate makes their three-year-old debut in the Roman Consul Stakes, the Group 1 runner-up and Group 3 winner racing for the first time since finishing eighth to Helmet in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick in April.
Connections recently knocked back a $1 million offer to sell Uate, Australian Bloodstock syndicate principal Jamie Lovett confident the horse will develop into a Group 1 winner.
“He should go really well third preparation,” Lovett said.
Rounding out the Roman Consul Stakes 2011 nominations are the Bart Cummings-trained Do You Think, Magic Albert filly Al’s Magic Miss, Snitzel filly Hollyweird, the Chris Waller-trained Startreusse and Peter Snowden’s lightly-raced son of Redoute’s Choice Galah.
The 2011 Roman Consul Stakes final field, as well as the acceptances for all of Saturday’s features including the Epsom Handicap and The Metropolitan, will be published right here at Races.com.au on Wednesday.
