David Vandyke’s classy Commands gelding Lamasery has been handed a one kilogram penalty for both the 2011 Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup 2011 by Racing Victoria’s Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter for the five-year-old’s win in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Handicap (2400m) at Rosehill last Saturday.
Lamasery beat home a quality field of stayers in the Colin Stephen Handicap and with their subsequent weight penalty, has moved up the order of entry for both the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 15 and the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) to run at Flemington on Tuesday November 1, 2011.
Original Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup weights for the 2011 spring carnival were released on August 30, Lamasery allocated 50kg for both staying showdowns.

Since then Lamasery has won two Group 3 features having also saluted in the Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on September 10.
With their weight penalty, Lamasery now has 51kg for the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.
They now sit equal 40th, up from 52nd, on the Caulfield Cup ballot and has risen from 98th to 60th on the Melbourne Cup elimination order, passing the first ballot clause with their last-start success.
“Lamasery’s last two performances have been very good and following on from his win in the Kingston Town Stakes, he then carried top weight of 57kg and fought on strongly to win the Colin Stephen at his first run beyond 2000 metres,” Carpenter said.
Warwick Farm-based trainer Vandyke knows that the spring cups are an ambitious aim for Lamasery, and the Luxbet odds on the horse in the futures betting reflects this.
Caulfield Cup 2011 odds at Luxbet have Lamasery rated a $51 chance, while in their Melbourne Cup betting markets the galloper is an $101 outsider.
Lamasery, however, is at much shorter odds for the 2011 The Metropolitan Handicap at Royal Randwick this Saturday.
One of only two horses exempt from ballot for the $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) along with the Lloyd Williams-owned import Green Moon, Lamasery sits equal first on the ballot and after their Colin Stephen success is at the top of The Metropolitan odds at Luxbet at a quote of $5.50.
The Metropolitan 2011 is one of four Group 1 features on the Epsom Super Saturday race programme at Randwick and the final field is due for release on Wednesday.
Lamasery was exempt from penalty for their Colin Stephen victory in The Metropolitan weights meaning they are ideally weighted to score their Group 1 maiden on Saturday with just 52kg.
