Saturday’s Colin Stephen Handicap winner Lamasery has shot to the top of the 2011 Metropolitan Handicap betting markets ahead of this weekend’s Royal Randwick romp, the talented David Vandyke-trained stayer ready for their maiden Group 1 assignment.
Five-year-old Commands gelding Lamasery took their career record to nine wins from 15 starts on Saturday with a gritty victory in the $125,000 Group 3 Colin Stephen Handicap (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens, proving their potential for not only the Epsom Handicap, but possibly the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in Victoria later in the spring.
Saluting as the 57kg topweight of the field with Brenton Avdulla in the mount, Lamasery ($4.80) held on in a close finish to beat home the Anthony Cummings-trained Red Eye Special ($15) by a nose while Gai Waterhouse’s Two For Tea ($41) finished a further half-length away third.
2011 Metropolitan Handicap Odds
The hard-fought Colin Stephen Handicap success was Lamasery’s second Rosehill stakes win on the trot following their similarly resolute final-stride victory in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) earlier in the month.
Vandyke now plans to accept Lamasery for this Saturday’s $400,000 Group The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick, for which the galloper is now the $5.50 Luxbet favourite.
“If he pulls up well he’ll run in The Metropolitan next week and then we’ll look at the Caulfield Cup,” Vandyke confirmed.
“Dare I say it…the Melbourne Cup. No, I will say it – Melbourne Cup.”
Pre their Colin Stephen success, Lamasery was rated $9.50 for The Metropolitan, but they now hold favouritism over the John Thompson-trained Hill Stakes winner Trusting ($7.50), Waterhouse’s Brisbane Cup conqueror Tullamore ($8) and Robert Hickmott’s Newcastle Gold Cup winner Green Moon ($8.50).
Having carted a hefty 57kg to victory in the Colin Stephen, Lamasery looks well positioned for The Metropolitan win as they are allocated just 52kg for the showdown and are exempt from penalty for their victory on the weekend.
Avdulla has been confirmed as sticking aboard Lamasery for the Metropolitan with his other possible mount in the race, Green Moon, unlikely to accept with owner Lloyd Williams’ leaning towards the $200,000 Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield on October 8 for the imported stayer.
Lamasery is also still in contention for the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 15 and the iconic $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup, Flemington’s testing two-mile (3200m) feature to run on Tuesday November 1, 2011.
In Caulfield Cup 2011 odds at Luxbet Lamasery currently sits as a $51 outsider in markets clearly lead by Mark Kavanagh’s Flemington specialist December Draw ($3.70).
Meanwhile, Underwood Stakes winning Kiwi Lion Tamer is the $9 top elect in the 2011 Melbourne Cup betting markets at Luxbet with Lamasery a $101 roughie.
