Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
One of the feature black-type races on quality Rosehill racing programme for this Saturday, the 2011 Colin Stephen Handicap betting markets have seen plenty of action since odds were released, punters keen to get behind a number of the stayers engaged in this spring carnival clash.
Running as Rosehill Race 7 at 4:40pm (local time), the $125,000 Group 3 Colin Stephen Handicap (2400m) field features 11 hopefuls with David Vandyke’s topweight Lamasery the easing favourite at Luxbet.
Caulfield – Melbourne Cup 2011 nominee Lamasery comes off a gritty win in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at the track on September 10, which saw them open at the top of the market’s for Saturday at a quote of $2.50.
With questions arising over their ability to step up 400 metres to the 2400m for the first time, and their sharp weight rise from 53kg to 57kg, Lamasery has since drifted out to $2.70 in the Colin Stephen Handicap odds.
So if not on the favourite, where is the money at in the Colin Stephen betting?
- #2 Ironstein ($8 into $6.50 Luxbet)
Gerald Ryan’s talented Zabeel six-year-old is the big market mover with punters doing the form on this race and coming around to the fact that Ironstein is the best 2400 metre performer in this field. They have twice won over the distance, and recently ran a good fourth over it in the Brisbane Cup during the winter. Coming off a fifth to race favourite Lamasery in the Kingston Town may not look good numbers wise, but watch the replay and you’ll see they were very unlucky there, blocked for a run, tightened for room and never given a shot. Also meet Lamasery better in the weights. Definite pick for us.
- #11 Adroitly ($7 into $5.50 Luxbet)
Peter Snowden-trained Octagonal gelding blew rivals away over 2800 metres at Canterbury September 7 by a commanding seven and a half lengths, they were simply too good there and are ready to show the form again on Saturday. Stepping down in distance which is unusual but shouldn’t be an issue. Is there first Group test so need to show form against class horses here, but have earned the start.
No other real money coming in for anything else but at longer odds the likes of the David Payne-trained Praecido ($9) on the rails, Anthony Cumming’s last-start Rosehill winner Red Eye Special ($12) and Brian Smith’s Newcalste Gold Cup fourth placegetter Raeburn ($14) deserve a mention.
